Valuing a company can be challenging. Yet there are many times in a company’s life when a valuation can be critical — when raising capital, for tax, accounting and even just for internal purposes.

Depending on the context, valuing a company can be equal measures science and art — which can make it a really challenging topic for startups to navigate. Further, valuation issues tend to arise for a number of reasons during the life cycle of a startup which makes it a highly relevant topic for many founders.

In our second Fintech Masterclass for 2017 we wanted to explore how a valuation is undertaken and what the general process is around getting one done. To do this we called in our friends from EY to give us the lowdown on the valuation process.

The session covered a number of methodologies commonly used for valuation purposes and highlighted the different routes a company can go down when trying to come to a ‘number’. The session highlighted what a complex topic this really is and why startups need to work closely with a trusted advisor to come up with a methodology that can stand up under scrutiny.

The workshop was a thorough overview of the topic and provided many of the founders with a great overview of the topic.
