Will Marcia Lower her Defences
– And befriend a vegetarian vampire?

Marcia shut the door firmly and leaned her back against it, while whispering the words of a protection spell as her brother Callum and his dangerous friend drove away. It was one of the first spells Abu had taught her. Her grandmother was a truly gifted seer, of course she knew this day would come, that a vampire would visit Marcia’s home.
Rubbing her bare arms and shuddering, she stepped into her bright, sunshine filled kitchen and moved the old fashioned kettle onto the hob. Sunlight — huh. How was that undead S.O.B. awake during the day, let alone able to withstand the sun? Callum had never told her — maybe he didn’t know, although that was unlikely: As alpha of the Wellington werewolf pack, he sniffed out secrets and wielded information like a world class spy.
Marcia carried a mug of jasmine tea out to the veranda where she had so recently sat with Callum and Fergus; her bag of runes still lay on their special cloth atop the table. She let her mind drift, along with the fragrant curls of steam rising from the tea, and asked the universe if it was safe to befriend the vampire.
Images flooded her mind: Fergus chopping wood outside his cabin, arm muscles flexing, then his broad physique was kneeling — on the roof of her brother’s feed store as he hammered down tarpaulin and made repairs after the storm. She heard him speak in his rough Highland burr, and saw him relax in in a battered leather chair, a whisky in hand as he read an old book. But what made her cringe, and pull out of her trance, was witnessing that he leaned in toward the neck of a steer, sank his fangs into it and drank.
That had been unexpected — and somewhat sickening. She took a sip of her tea, but finding it had lost its appeal she set it aside. Callum had described the vampire as ‘vegetarian’, but he talked nonsense just to rile her up, so she hadn’t given the term much thought. A fanger sipping blood from animals wasn’t as bad as from people, but if he drained them — Marcia’s stomach gave an uncomfortable lurch.
She’d ask Callum. But her hand hovered over the contact list on her phone.
Trust your instincts. She could almost hear Abu’s soft voice as her grandmother coached Marcia’s mastering of her gift. Here and now, she allowed herself to recollect what she’d sensed during Fergus’s runecasting, and to read between the lines of his questions. This creature wasn’t angry or vengeful, nor was he seeking power — no, his concerns had been identifying a viable partner, finding love, and protecting his friends.
Perhaps the vampire was not something she should fear, despite being a deadly predator. Callum trusted him, and for all his jokes and posturing, her brother was no fool. He let Fergus hang out with the pack plenty.
Fergus’s presence had been calming, he’d poured oil on the ‘waters’ of her back-and-forth bickering with her sibling, and she appreciated his old fashioned manners. Charming? Maybe, only time would tell if that was genuine or a ‘meet the parents’ act. He was definitely easy on the eye. Marcia experienced a pang of envy for this woman who her divination had identified as ‘the one.’
Her phone rang, and before raising it to her ear she studied the screen. Only the number showed — this was probably work. She exuded efficiency as she accepted the call.
“Hi Marcia, it’s Fergus.”
“Hello,” she said warily. “Is something wrong?”
Wasn’t that the strangest thing? Marcia allowed herself a small chuckle a half hour later, as she fired up her laptop . Vlad coming to me, for dating advice!
