Best Budget-friendly Restaurants in Paris

France may be renowned for its haute cuisine and world-famous wines, but visiting Paris doesn’t have to mean expensive menus and overpriced drinks.

In this article, I’ve rounded up a selection of wine bars and restaurants I’ve visited in the city that go beyond the stereotype of formal dining and white tablecloths, but relaxed places to enjoy good food and soak up an authentic Parisian atmosphere without stretching your budget. From cosy Italian bistros, vibrant food halls and outdoor terraces with Eiffel Tower views, here are some of my favourite affordable restaurants in the French capital.

Brasserie Le Convention

I really enjoyed dining at this classic Parisian brasserie in the heart of the 15th arrondissement. As soon as we stepped in, we were greeted by incredibly friendly staff, who instantly made us feel welcome. What stood out to me was the consideration the restaurant had taken to ensure the menu was provided in a choice of languages to accommodate different guests, meaning we could select our preferred language: English, which put us at ease right away. We did order in French out of politeness but the kind staff were more than happy to proceed in English, before jumping into German to serve the table next to us which I found impressive.

The Brasserie Le Convention provides a cosy bistro atmosphere with traditional dark wood features and has a relaxed terrace, making it an ideal place to stop by for a casual drink or leisurely dinner. The menu offers a good choice of affordable French comfort food, from steak-frites to delicious fragrant salads, while the salmon tartare is particularly worth trying. With its late opening hours, it’s an authentic, easy-going spot to relax away from the tourist crowds.

LE QUOTIDIEN

Located in the 15th arrondissement, just a few minutes from Convention metro station, I found Le Quotidien to be a relaxed independent brasserie, serving delicious yet affordable French classics and apéro sharing plates throughout the day. The venue also has its own deli, offering a tempting selection of freshly baked goods and pastries that are perfect for a light snack or afternoon goûter.

The menu features a good selection of French wines and casual evening drinks, whether you choose to dine inside or on the terrace. Once again, the staff here were very friendly and accommodating which add to the welcoming atmosphere, so much so that we found ourselves returning to dine there for a second time. With its laid-back neighbourhood feel, its a popular spot to visit anytime of the year.

Café du Trocadéro

This popular brasserie had been on my Paris list for as long as I could remember, so when I was staying in the Trocadero area, I knew I had to visit. I had assumed it would be busy and very fancy inside given its elegant interiors but when we stepped inside we found the place to have a relaxed sense of understated luxury that never once felt intimidating. We didn’t have a reservation but were pleasantly surprised to be seated in the window with a front-row view of the Eiffel Tower, perfectly positioned to catch the magical light show as it sparkles on the hour.

The staff were welcoming and very attentive which added to the overall dining experience. The menu features delicious dishes that don’t carry the premium prices often expected in such a prime location. I had the chicken in a creamy tarragon sauce which was exquisite. Outside a heated glass terrace allows guests to enjoy a drink with enchanting views or just a two-minute walk away is the famous Trocadéro viewing platform to see Paris’ famous landmark up close.

Café Kléber

Located near the Eiffel Tower at Place du Trocadéro, Café Kléber is a traditional French brasserie that has retained a sense of old-world Parisian charm with its Art Deco interiors, soft low lighting and crisp white linen tablecloths yet offers a relaxed yet refined experience.

I visited for breakfast and and the most delicious omelette with croissant, making it a great place to start the day. It’s a popular place for people-watching, with a steady flow of Parisians and visitors passing through this iconic part of the city. The metro station is also conveniently located just outside, providing easy access to the centre of Paris and main attractions.

La Dame de Paris

Just steps away from Notre-Dame, on Rue d’Arcole, one of my favourite hidden streets in Paris, I discovered this charming brasserie on a work trip where I was dining solo. I was instantly warmly welcomed inside and seated in the window with a lovely view of the street outside. I ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc from a well stocked wine list and was kindly offered complimentary apéritif samples to try by the friendly waiters.

Alongside its sit-down menu of classic French dishes, La Dame de Paris also offers a selection of homemade delicatessen products including exquisite desserts, pastries and takeaway sandwiches, ideal for a quick bite or picnic-style treat as you wander the city.

Café Gallery Opéra

We stumbled upon this traditional French brasserie after struggling to find a place to eat in the busy central area of Opéra, in the 9th arrondissement. It had started to rain and although the place was full, the kind staff didn’t turn us away but instead found us a cosy spot up a corner by the window and brought over some extra seats around a tiny table.

Despite its prime location being one of the most affluent part of Paris, we were surprised to find affordable drinks and dining options that we decided to stay all evening, trying a selection of French dishes including duck confit with sautéed potatoes, traditional French onion soup and delicacies such as escargot.

Café Gallery Opéra is just a short walk from the iconic Palais Garnier and major department stores such as Galeries Lafayette Haussmann. The friendly, English-speaking staff add to the warm, laid-back ambience, making it an easy place for visitors to unwind and feel at home in the heart of the city.

Barto Vincennes

I enjoyed a relaxed evening at Barto, a popular local favourite just outside central Paris, opposite the stunning Château de Vincennes. Known for its approachable atmosphere, good-value wine and comforting French-Italian dishes, as well as authentic wood-fired pizzas and generous portions, it is a place I look forward to returning to on my next visit.

The space has a playful, quirky feel to it, including a striking red Fiat installation that adds to its charm. With its friendly, neighbourhood vibe, it’s an ideal spot to escape the more tourist-heavy areas while still enjoying a lively, easy-going Parisian dining experience.

Paris proves that some of its best dining experiences aren’t found in its most expensive restaurants, but often in the quiet overlooked neighbourhood spots where good food, good wine and local charm come naturally.
