Movie Review — Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet’s Wildest Performance Yet

Directed by Josh Safdie, one half of the Safdie Brothers, the film carries his signature atmosphere of anxiety and restless energy. Timothée Chalamet transforms real-life table tennis legend Marty Reisman into a controversial icon. In Marty Supreme, Chalamet delivers an unusually unrestrained performance, aggressive, arrogant, self-assured, and almost unbearably egotistical. The character is not particularly likable, yet impossible to ignore.

As the story progresses, Marty is forced to fall from his pedestal. The film gains much of its strength from this shift: the gradual stripping away of his defenses reveals vulnerability beneath the bravado. Without this transformation, the character would merely be insufferable. Chalamet successfully captures the painful distance between a man worshipped as a legend and the fragile person underneath.

The emotional peak of Marty Supreme centers on the showdown with his rival, Endo. Safdie’s trademark high-pressure editing works perfectly here, every rally across the table feels suffocatingly intense. The match transcends simple victory or defeat. Marty defeating Endo is not only about personal pride, but also a symbolic act of defiance against the International Table Tennis Association. The catharsis comes from the release of rebellion rather than the scoreboard itself.

Although the film spends considerable time building Marty’s eccentricity and manic energy, the emotional continuity occasionally feels fragmented. We clearly see his anger and obsession, yet we never fully understand what drives him internally. The screenplay appears to rely heavily on the actor’s charisma to carry the narrative, and once the adrenaline fades, the story can feel thinner than its energy initially suggests.
