The Alchemy of Balance

The idea of balance brings forth an image of the scales where it’s two sides must be weighed evenly. However, that’s not what Temperance teaches. This Major Arcana card is about harmony, not perfection. It’s about mixing fire and water in the same cup and finding a blend that doesn’t physically burn you out or mentally drown you inside your emotions.
For me, this is one of the most challenging lessons to integrate in my body.
The ironic thing is that I’m a Libra. Balance should be my superpower. The scales are literally my zodiac sign. You’d think I’d have this whole “graceful harmony” practice all figured out.
But no.
Instead of being Zen master Christopher, I’ve spent most of my life more like a one-man circus act, juggling schedules, responsibilities, and relationships while insisting, “Don’t worry, I’ve got it!” (I usually don’t.) Balance isn’t natural for me. It’s hard-won.
The Roots of My Imbalance
I see in my past where it started. My childhood home wasn’t one of stability or structure. My younger sister and her boyfriend often ran the show. My mother was caught in a co-dependent, trauma-bonded cycle with them, while my father, a mail carrier, came home from his shift each night and retreated to the sanctuary of his bedroom, avoiding the chaos blowing through the rest of the home.
I did the same.
I retreated to my own room, distracting myself with books, video games, or lifting weights. Eventually, I stopped living at home in any real way by spending time at school, at the gym, at work, or with friends.
Self-reliance became my survival. I kept busy to stay safe. If I was always moving, always focused on something, I didn’t have to face the disarray around me.
That busyness served me. It got me into college, allowed me to graduate, build a career, and even create a family. Yet I never learned how to slow down. I never learned how to really be with another person in a healthy relationship. My distractions became my fortress.
No wonder being present has always been my greatest challenge.
The Speed I Can’t Turn Off
Fast forward to adulthood, and that survival mechanism still runs the show. My schedule is perpetual motion where I’m up at 5 a.m. to write, record, and edit. Then hit the gym by 7 three days a week and out the door to be at work by 9 to deliver for UPS where I’m non-stop walking, lifting, and driving until 6 or 9 p.m. Finally at the end of my day I make it home for the precious moments I get to spend with Jessica before repeating the cycle the next day.
The weekends are sacred. This is our only time without work in the way, but even then, it’s hard, almost impossible, for me to slow down. It’s a habit.
This constant motion feels like discipline, but it feels like avoidance. If I don’t stop, I don’t have to feel. If I don’t pause, I don’t have to face the grief, the hurt, or the trauma that waits in the quiet shadows, only to scream when I stop.
The place this shows up most is in my relationships.
One night after a ten-hour shift, I came home to Jessica. She was sick in bed, needing comfort and connection. For the first time all day, we finally had a moment together. Then my phone rang. It was my daughter. Without thinking, I answered.
In that instant, my reaction told Jessica that she could wait. That her need for closeness was less important than a phone call.
The truth? The news could have waited. I could have looked at who was calling and chosen to call back after giving Jessica the time she deserved. Instead, my knee-jerk, trauma-driven reaction took over. I moved, acted, and made a decision all without presence.
That’s what happens when we live unbalanced. We react instead of respond. We choose old patterns instead of conscious ones.
Temperance as Alchemy
Temperance is the art of slowing down enough to notice. It’s about integration, not avoidance. It teaches us to blend opposites within ourselves: motion and stillness, discipline and presence, drive and softness.
For me, it’s literally about mixing the alchemical ingredients of emotion (water) with my action (fire). That’s why I know Temperance is my core soul lesson. The one I will wrestle with the most. And the one that will be the most rewarding when I practice it well.
This card is about healing through patience, through the small, daily practice of staying present long enough to make a choice rather than letting trauma choose for us.
When I don’t practice Temperance, I default to imbalance. When I do, even in small moments, I can feel the alchemy, the chaos within me turning into harmony, fire and water finally finding their harmonious mix.
Lessons from Temperance
- Balance isn’t equal parts. It’s the right proportion for this season of life. Some days demand more work. Others demand more presence.
- Integration is strength. Avoiding one side of ourselves only makes us weaker. True resilience comes from blending, not denying.
- Slow is powerful. The pause between stimulus and response is where healing begins.
Practical Application
Journal prompts:
- Where am I overextending myself right now?
- Where am I under nourishing my relationships or myself?
- What would it look like to mix instead of separate?
Action step: Choose one moment this week where you practice slowing down before reacting. Check the name on the phone before answering. Take a breath before responding. Pause long enough to ask, “What is being asked of me?”
Temperance is spiritual alchemy. It doesn’t ask us to abandon who we are, but to combine all of it, our energy, our stillness, our drive, and our love into a life that feels whole.
I’m still learning this lesson.
Some days I stumble. Some days I fail miserably. But each time I slow down, breathe, and stay present with the people who matter most, I get closer to the harmony Temperance calls me to learn.
And maybe that’s all any of us can do make that one conscious choice at a time. Even us stubborn Libras.
