What does it mean to develop a story?

Within the realm of a word lies a lexis:

exploration

sequence

build-up

An event is introduced into the story, it carries through — pouring into the lives and emotions of characters. They react … the story moves. Like a drop into a field (designed): reactions steer the narrative. Viewers/readers are led through.

To sequence is to discern how incidents unfold organically — from one thing to another. It’s not what you wish to see happen; it’s what naturally occurs in life (what we feel can happen). A perception, a certain aptitude dictates the feel.

It, however, becomes tackier with build-up: to lay a foundation, then meticulously place elements on top — creating a pyramid of balanced proportions (such requires disparate instinct: preciseness.)

During the 21st century, a certain wave altogether seems to have taken over storylines and structures: details. We offer and consume details; we read and relate details. They are minor aspects of a main plot line. Details are sufficient, innately — holding acres of narrative space . They serve in and by themselves: crumbs to nibble on (a bite-sized consumption).

Refraining from the trouble of exploring, sequencing and building-up, details highlight and draw attention to feasible realities — with minimum processing provided. The question then begs to be raised: do we watch/read stories to expand or extend? Do we wish to widen our perceptions or further stretch our conceived notions?

The former awakens, the latter confirms.

Do you look for evidence of what you already know? Or do you strive for unknown (conceptual) territory?

To defy? … To affirm?
