“Being” rather than becoming
There comes a point in the search when one realises that awakening is not something to be gained but something that happens when there is no longer anything to gain. It isn’t born of effort or discipline, but of the quiet that appears when effort dissolves. In that stillness, awareness begins to breathe on its own, as if the universe has taken over the work of being conscious. This is not a state to reach, but a natural rhythm — a poise that rises from within, like balance in the body that does not need to be taught but remembered.
The modern mind is trained to pursue, to refine, to become. It approaches awakening as another project, another horizon of self-improvement. Yet this very movement of striving keeps the mind spinning within its own orbit. When the mind exhausts itself — when the desire to become drops away — something else begins to unfold. It is not the loss of identity but the softening of it. What remains is a steady centre, quiet yet awake, where perception no longer fights to hold its place. Awareness simply stands, unshaken, without effort. That is what the ancients meant by “being” rather than becoming.
This stillness is not withdrawal or passivity. It is the natural condition of an uncluttered mind. In moments of deep absorption — when painting, listening, walking, or watching light move across a wall — you may notice that awareness flows without a controller. Action happens, thought arises, and yet something beneath it all remains still. That stillness is not separate from the movement; it is the space through which movement knows itself. When this is recognised, the division between inner and outer begins to dissolve. The self that seeks vanishes into the act of seeing.
Enlightenment, in this sense, is not a sudden illumination or an event that divides the before and after of life. It is the gradual remembering of how to rest in what has always been. It begins quietly, in ordinary moments — when there is no need to perform, no pressure to be spiritual, when one simply allows life to unfold as it is. The modern person often mistakes enlightenment for detachment or transcendence, but it is intimacy itself — complete contact with existence without interference. The more natural this becomes, the less there is to say about it. Words begin to fall away, and being itself becomes enough.
The paradox is that no technique can bring this about, yet practice can prepare the ground. Techniques are like scaffolding: useful until the structure stands on its own. Meditation, contemplation, or mindful creation are all ways of returning the mind to its native silence. But the final step is not a step at all — it is a release. The scaffolding falls away, and what remains is effortless awareness, the kind that does not belong to anyone. It moves through you as naturally as breath.
This quiet awakening does not announce itself. There is no thunderclap of revelation. It arrives like dawn — slowly, almost imperceptibly — until you notice that the light has changed. The ordinary becomes extraordinary, not because it is different, but because nothing is excluded from it. Thought continues, emotion continues, the world continues, but they no longer claim ownership over your being. You are not separate from what you observe. The watcher and the watched are one continuous field of seeing.
In this understanding, enlightenment ceases to be a goal. It becomes a way of living where awareness and action are not at odds. The artist creates without seeking recognition, the thinker observes without attachment, the lover loves without fear of loss. Life moves in its rhythm, and you move with it, neither ahead nor behind. The mind’s search for perfection ends because the perfection of being is already present.
To live this way is to rediscover the simplicity that was always there before thought complicated it — the uncontrived ease that cannot be taught. It is a stillness that rises by itself, a balance that cannot be forced, a grace that cannot be earned. When you stop trying to reach it, it finds you. And in that moment, you realise that awakening was never about becoming more — it was about remembering that you were never less.
