When we talk about the environment and climate change, our minds usually drift toward melting glaciers, rising sea levels, or the exhausting heatwaves we’ve been feeling lately. These are massive, global images that often make us feel small and, quite frankly, a bit helpless. But there is a piece of the environmental puzzle that is sitting right in our homes, our kitchens, our streets, and our hands every single day — and that is waste.

It’s strange, isn’t it? We talk about air pollution and water scarcity constantly, but waste is often the “forgotten” environmental crisis. We have developed this habit of thinking that once the trash van pulls away from our gate, the problem has vanished. In reality, for the environment, that is exactly where the story begins. The plastic packet we throw today doesn’t just vanish; it breaks down into tiny pieces that find their way into the water we drink and even the air we breathe. The food waste we dump doesn’t just sit there; it blends with all other waste to rot in landfills, release methane, and warms the very air that makes our summers so unbearable. Even the old phone we discard can leak toxins into the soil where our food grows. What we call ‘waste’ does not disappear. It only changes form, location, and ownership.

It leaves our hands, but it never leaves our home.

What makes waste important in environmental discussions is that it sits at the intersection of systems and everyday life. It is shaped by policies, markets, and infrastructures — but it is also something we encounter in our most ordinary routines. In that sense, waste allows us to see that large environmental processes are not separate from society, but deeply embedded within it.

When we look at waste, we must begin to understand that environmental problems are more than distant phenomena or future risks. They are about ongoing relationships — between production and consumption, between households and cities, and between different groups of people whose lives are connected through these flows.

Waste makes these connections visible. It shows us that what appears to be an individual act — throwing something away — is actually part of a much larger system of movement, labour, and transformation.

And perhaps that is why it deserves greater attention. Because in understanding waste, we begin to understand how environmental challenges are not located in one place, but are distributed across society in complex and often uneven ways.

And this is where we need to look at the problem differently. The environment is not something separate from us. It is shaped by how we live, what we consume, and what we discard. In that sense, environmental problems are also social problems.

Now think about it. Just a generation ago, our Indian households, while not perfect, were far less wasteful. Almost all items were repaired, reused, and passed on. Old clothes were either used for cleaning, or rather inherited down, along with textbooks, bicycles, schoolbags etc, furniture stayed in families for decades & objects had longer lives, and in many ways, they had deeper meaning.

But in only a few years, replacement has become faster than repair.

Now we live in a culture where objects are becoming temporary. And slowly, our relationships with those objects are changing as well. Earlier, things stayed with us. Now things pass through us. We use objects briefly, and then they move on, often becoming someone else’s problem.

So the question is: can we imagine moving back to a system where things do not simply pass through us and end up as waste?

This is where the idea of the circular economy becomes important. The circular economy may sound like a complex term, but the idea behind it is quite simple.

Right now, our economy largely works in a straight line. We take resources from nature, manufacture products, use them, and then throw them away. This is what we call a linear economy.

A circular economy, on the other hand is a system where resources are kept in use for as long as possible — products are designed to be repaired, reused, and recycled, and waste is not seen as an end point, but as a beginning of something new.

But moving toward such a system is not just a technical challenge — it is also a social and cultural one. Unfortunately, at some point, modern societies began to believe that endless consumption equals progress. That ‘newer’ automatically means ‘better’. That ‘convenience’ is more important than ‘durability’.

But if we look at it closely, it is fascinating that many of the practices we today describe as part of the “circular economy” have existed in our everyday lives for decades. Our informal economies have long practiced repair, reuse, resale, exchange, and recycling — the kabadiwalas, scrap collectors, street repair workers, second-hand markets, sanitation workers, informal recyclers.

In many elite conversations about sustainability, these systems are often seen as backward. But ironically, these are some of the most circular systems we already have. And the people who sustain these systems are not marginal to the environmental question, they are central to it.

These invisible actors are, in fact, one of the largest environmental forces in our society. Their importance lies not only in the work they perform, but in the role they occupy within the broader ecological system of our cities. They stand at the point where what is discarded re-enters circulation, where waste is not simply an endpoint, but something that is managed, redirected, and absorbed back into material flows.

Without their labour, the distance between consumption and its consequences would collapse. The waste we generate would accumulate rapidly, overwhelming urban spaces, disrupting everyday life, and intensifying environmental damage. In this sense, their work is not supplementary, but is foundational. It holds together the fragile balance that allows our current systems of consumption to continue functioning.

However, despite this centrality, they remain largely absent from how we imagine environmental solutions. Sustainability is often discussed in terms of future technologies and policies, while the people who are already sustaining these processes in the present remain overlooked. This disconnect is important, because it reveals a gap between how environmental problems are experienced and how they are represented.

To take the environment seriously, therefore, also means to take their work seriously. It requires us to see them not as peripheral or informal, but as integral to the functioning of our environmental systems. Because a sustainable future cannot be built by ignoring the very people who are already sustaining it.

Recognizing their work also means taking responsibility ourselves. Even if we are not directly handling waste, we can make their work safer, easier, and more effective. And this is exactly what the recent Solid Waste Management Rules 2026 emphasise — segregation at source: separating waste into wet waste, dry waste, hazardous waste, and sanitary waste.

This may sound like a boring, unnecessary step, but it has a large impact. When waste is mixed, it becomes difficult, dangerous, and sometimes impossible to recover value from it. But when it is segregated, it becomes part of a system.

This brings us to a question many people often ask: “Can individual actions really make a difference?”

I think this is not the most useful way to frame the question.

Not because individual actions are unimportant, but because environmental change is never only individual or only systemic. It is always both.

If one household segregates waste, it may seem insignificant. But when segregation becomes a shared social practice — across neighbourhoods, apartments, schools, and markets — systems begin to adapt around it.

We must recognise that social change begins culturally before it becomes infrastructural. And that is why conversations matter. And with conversations surrounding issues of taboo, such as waste, they must happen without fear or judgment.

Today, many people genuinely want to act more responsibly, but they feel confused. One day they hear plastic is harmful. Another day they hear paper bags also have environmental costs. One person says electric vehicles are the future. Another raises concerns about battery waste.

The reality is that environmental issues are complex. There are no perfect solutions.

But complexity should not become an excuse for inaction.

Even small shifts matter.

Using products for longer. Repairing before replacing. Supporting local systems. Reducing unnecessary consumption. Segregating waste. Carrying reusable items. Being mindful of food waste. Respecting the labour of sanitation workers.

None of these actions require perfection. All they simply require is awareness.

And perhaps awareness itself is the beginning of environmental ethics.

I also feel that younger generations today are inheriting an extremely difficult environmental future. Many children are growing up in cities where lakes are disappearing, summers feel harsher, and air quality can become dangerous. People are starting to recognise that Climate change is no longer a distant prediction, but something we are already experiencing.

And yet, even in the face of these challenges, hope is not absent.

Across the country, countless cases are emerging, if we follow the news today. Communities are doing cleanup drives. Women-led groups are managing local waste systems. Young entrepreneurs are working on sustainable solutions. Resident welfare associations are building composting systems. Local governments are experimenting with decentralized waste management.

Change is happening. Albeit slowly. Maybe unevenly. But it is happening. What this tells us is that environmental transformation is not a single moment of change, but an ongoing process, that unfolds across communities, institutions, and everyday practices.

Perhaps that’s why this World Environment Day should not be framed solely in terms of fear. It is also an opportunity to reflect on how we relate to the world around us, and how those relationships can be reshaped over time.

Because environmentalism, in this sense, is not about protecting nature as something separate from us, but about recognizing that we are already embedded within it. The air we breathe, the water that moves through our bodies, the soil that produces our food, the fire within our spirits, and the space that holds it all — these are not external elements. They are the very conditions — the panchabhootas — that sustain life.

The modern systems of living often create a sense of distance, that allow us to consume without seeing production, and to discard without seeing consequences. This distance hasn’t occurred to us accidentally, but is produced through the ways our economies and infrastructures are organized.

It is interesting, then, to return to something many of us have heard since childhood. Mahatma Gandhi’s words — that the Earth provides enough for everyone’s need, but not for everyone’s greed. This idea is widely taught, widely remembered, and widely accepted. But its limited presence in everyday practice raises an important question about the conditions under which certain values become difficult to sustain.

When systems consistently reward excess, speed, and disposability, principles like restraint and sufficiency become harder to practice, even when they are widely acknowledged. The gap we see, therefore, is not simply between knowledge and action — it is between values and the structures within which those values must operate.

Therefore, to reiterate, our environmental questions are inherently social ones. It is not only about what we know, but about how our ways of living are organized, and what kinds of behaviours they make possible or difficult.

Before I conclude, I want to leave you with one thought.

Maybe the environmental crisis is not only asking us to develop new technologies. Maybe it is also asking us to rethink what kind of society we want to become.

A society that only consumes? Or a society that also cares?

A society that hides its waste? Or a society that takes responsibility for it?

Let us move beyond the idea of “out of sight, out of mind,” and work toward genuine societal change — for our climate, and for our shared future. Jai Hind.
