May We Never See Ourselves Through the Eyes of Those Who Never Truly Saw Us

On self-worth, emotional awareness, and learning to see yourself beyond others’ perceptions

Somewhere along the way, most of us tried to be seen by people who never really wanted to look. We showed up. We explained ourselves. We softened our edges, sharpened our words, waited a little longer, hoped a little harder.

They were there but there was always a distance we couldn’t name.

A space that never closed, no matter how honestly we stood in front of them. And slowly, without realizing it, we began looking at ourselves through their eyes.

We questioned our worth because they didn’t notice it. We doubted our depth because they never went that far. We mistook their blindness for our lack.

But not being seen doesn’t mean we weren’t visible. It only means they didn’t know how to look.

The truth is, not everyone has the capacity to see another person fully. Some people look, but they don’t witness. Some stay close, yet never arrive. And this isn’t always cruelty sometimes it’s limitation.

Sometimes people can only meet others at the depth they’ve met themselves.

What hurts is that we often take this personally.

We try harder. We perform better. We become louder, or quieter, or smaller hoping one version of us will finally be enough to be noticed. And in doing so, we move further away from who we actually are.

What we forget is this, we too, have been on the other side. Knowingly or unknowingly, we’ve missed people.

We’ve listened without fully hearing. We’ve cared, but not deeply enough. We’ve been present, yet distant. Not because we didn’t mean well but because we didn’t know how to hold what was being offered. Seeing someone is not automatic.

It is an act. A responsibility.

And still, there is a part of me that wants to see people too, especially the ones I wish would see me. So I try. I try to meet them where they are coming from, with patience, with curiosity, with care.

Because there is always a history behind people, something shaping them that we don’t fully know. We rarely understand where someone is coming from, or what they are carrying silently. That’s why selfawareness matters.

Sometimes all it takes is honest communication, a pause, and real listening not the kind where we wait to reply but the kind where we stay present. And truly want to listen someone.

Through that we understand what is truly happening beneath the surface. And even if it doesn’t change everything, at least it brings clarity. At least it brings truth.

And when you do make someone feel seen truly seen, that is never small. That is enough. That matters. Even if it doesn’t last forever.

But before that, there is something even more important.

You must see yourself first.

Not through borrowed opinions or disappointed expectations or the eyes of people who never learned your language.

See yourself with honesty and gentleness.

With the awareness of how much you’ve carried. With respect for how you kept going even when clarity didn’t come easily.

And please never judge yourself by the eyes that couldn’t recognize you. Never shrink your truth to fit someone else’s blindness.

Being unseen does not make you invisible. It only means your light was never meant for them.

May you learn to recognize yourself clearly.

And may that be enough before anything else.

I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart: I am, I am, I am. — Sylvia Plath
