Modi is losing his charm slowly but surely—call it anti-incumbency, rising age, or whatever—but the trend is very visible, and now the succession race is on. Yogi Adityanath is widely seen as the most popular leader after Modi and is likely to succeed him. But Mr. Amit Shah, the Home Minister and second in command, has other plans. He wants the position himself, so will he jeopardize Yogi in his home turf in the UP Assembly elections of 2027 or not? It will be interesting to see. What is more interesting is this: if Yogi doesn’t win, then it would be Akhilesh Yadav. Yadav is the only credible face in the opposition. Now it’s up to Amit Shah to decide whether he wants the strongest leader in his party or the strongest in the opposition to go head-to-head. If Yadav wins UP, he will be unstoppable. Amit Shah must choose: empower his party’s strongest contender or risk empowering the opposition’s most formidable leader.
