What color ATV is most frequently involved in quad riding accidents?

Does the color of an ATV have anything to do with accident frequency? I decided to dig deep on the colors of quads and the likelihood that color plays a part in the number of ATV accidents reported annually.

Let’s get right to the point. There is no universally accepted ranking of ATV colors because accident involvement depends much more on rider behavior, vehicle size, amount of miles ridden, trail conditions, and time of day than fender and tank color.

What I have found was some general crash ranking based on the risk versus the actual accident numbers. The riskiest color based on general guidance is black. Black ATV’s tend to be the highest risk because of visibility issues in low light. The next quad color on the list is gray for similar reasons as black quads, but also due to blending into pavement and overcast conditions. Blue follows next with above-average risk for accidents based on studies from similar vehicles but not specifically ATV’s. Red and dark green ATV’s are next on the list with similar above average risk as well.

Now let’s look at some of the lower risk ATV colors. These are typically bright green, orange, and yellow. The simple fact is that these bright colors offer better visibility to other all terrain vehicles and provide a below-average risk of accident. White quads can also be included in the lower risk fender and tank colors since they too offer a better visibility in all light conditions.

Let’s face it, the effect of an ATV’s color is relatively small when compared to factors like speeding, lack of rider training, substance impairment, handlebar fatigue, and trail distractions. And the likelihood of accidents also increases substantially on the kid-sized quads. Even the studies that found a color effect in similar concluded that visibility is only one contributor to the overall crash risk.

You can learn much more about smaller sized, less popular branded ATV’s at Kids Quad Stop. Overall, it appears ATV safety is a stockpile of factors that can make your ride memorable and provide an opportunity to do it all again tomorrow.
