Is it ‘Breath’ or ‘Breathe’?

These words have nearly similar spellings but have different meanings and pronunciations. Let’s understand how they differ.

BREATH:

‘Breath’ is a noun which refers to the air that is taken into and out of your lungs during inhalation and exhalation.

In the singular form, this word can be used to refer to the smallest movement of air (wind).

It was a hot, humid day without a breath of breeze.

The singular form of this word is also used to refer to a small amount of something. A breath of something means a sign, hint, or suggestion of something.

BREATHE:

‘Breathe’ is a verb which refers to the process of inhaling and exhaling air.

Remember to breathe in through your nose, not your mouth.

I was so anxious, I could hardly breathe!

‘Breathe’ is used in direct speech to describe speaking quietly, but intensely.

‘Don’t make a sound’, the thief breathed into my ear.
