I remember the days when I was whole, when my thoughts, my dreams, my desires were mine alone. But somewhere along the way, I began to merge with you, to intertwine our identities so seamlessly that I couldn’t distinguish where you ended and I began. At first, it felt natural, even comforting. But now, as I stand here, I realize I’ve lost myself in the process.
It’s a strange feeling, this blending of selves. On one hand, it’s beautiful to share your life so completely with another person. But on the other hand, it leaves you wondering: who am I without you? When our identities become so enmeshed, it’s hard to remember the person I was before we became “we.”
In the beginning, it was effortless. Everything we did together felt like an adventure, like a discovery of something new and exciting. I remember how I felt when we first met — alive, independent, self-assured. My life was full of possibilities, and I carried my own dreams in my heart. There was a certain magic in those days, a kind of carefree existence where we both maintained our own sense of self while sharing our love. I could still hear my own voice amidst the harmony of us. But slowly, over time, things began to change. I didn’t notice it at first; it was gradual, subtle.
You see, love isn’t always about finding balance. Sometimes, it’s about losing yourself in the rush of emotions, in the shared moments, in the promises that grow louder as time passes. It’s easy to get caught up in someone else’s world, to forget where your own ends and theirs begins. When you’re constantly merging with someone, you start to lose track of your own identity. You start believing that the only way to feel loved, to feel needed, is to become entirely consumed by the other person’s needs, their dreams, their expectations. Slowly, you give up pieces of yourself. You start adjusting your life to fit theirs, and at first, it doesn’t feel like a sacrifice. It feels like love.
But somewhere, deep down, it starts to hurt. You begin to wonder: who am I really? What do I want? What do I need? Why does everything I do now feel like it’s centered around you? I used to make choices for myself, I used to know what I wanted out of life. But now, I don’t remember the last time I did something that was entirely for me. The things I used to love, those moments where I felt most myself are becoming distant memories. I used to go for runs, to lose myself in the rhythm of my feet against the pavement. I used to spend hours writing, pouring my soul onto paper. But now, it’s harder to do those things. I don’t even know where I fit in anymore.
It’s as if I’ve become a shadow of who I once was, a reflection of your desires, your dreams. I lost track of the passions that once fueled me. I stopped chasing the things that made me feel alive because I was so focused on chasing after you. But now, I don’t even know where to start. I feel like I’ve forgotten how to be me.
I didn’t realize how much of myself had faded until I found myself at a crossroads. Looking at the person in the mirror, I couldn’t even remember the last time I felt connected to the woman I used to be. When did I stop asking myself what I wanted, what I needed? When did my dreams become yours, and my life become secondary to yours? And more importantly, why didn’t I see it sooner?
It’s a strange feeling when you lose yourself in someone else. You don’t just lose your identity; you lose your sense of purpose, your reason for existing beyond the relationship. You start to wonder: is this really love? Is love supposed to feel like this constant giving of yourself, to the point where you don’t know where you end and they begin? I thought love meant two people coming together, not one person dissolving into the other. I thought love was supposed to make you feel more alive, not less.
But somehow, along the way, I forgot. I forgot that I am my own person. I forgot that it’s okay to have dreams that don’t involve us, to have desires that are just mine. I forgot that I’m allowed to live for myself, too. Because when I look back now, I see how much of myself I let slip away. I let myself fade into the background, becoming just another part of you. It wasn’t intentional. It wasn’t something I planned. But it happened anyway.
And now I’m left standing in the middle of a life that feels unfamiliar. I still love you, but I don’t know how to love myself anymore. I don’t know how to reclaim the parts of me that I lost. The woman who stood strong, who had her own dreams, her own passions, her own sense of self, is buried somewhere beneath the layers of “we.” And every time I try to reach for her, I feel guilty. I feel like I’m betraying you. Like I’m abandoning the life we’ve built together. But at the same time, I know I can’t keep going like this. I can’t keep losing myself in you.
I miss the woman I used to be. I miss the woman who was so sure of herself, the woman who didn’t need anyone to complete her. I miss the freedom I had to make choices for myself, to live for myself. I miss the feeling of being whole, of having my own identity. But how do you go back? How do you rediscover yourself when you’ve become so intertwined with someone else that it feels impossible to separate? How do you find your way back when you’ve lost the map of who you are?
Maybe it’s not about going back to who I was before, but about learning how to be both myself and part of something bigger. Maybe it’s about finding the balance between our love and my individuality. I’ve learned that it’s possible to love deeply without losing yourself. It’s possible to be whole while sharing your life with someone else. But it requires strength, honesty, and a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths. It means being willing to ask for time for yourself, to set boundaries, and to speak up when you feel like you’re losing yourself.
I don’t want to lose you. I don’t want to walk away from the love we’ve built. But I also don’t want to lose myself in the process. So, I’m learning to carve out space for me again. I’m learning to rediscover the things that make me feel alive, that make me feel like me. It won’t be easy. It won’t be instant. But I believe it’s necessary. Because in the end, love isn’t about losing yourself for the sake of someone else. It’s about growing together, while still holding onto who you are.
So, I’m taking the time to heal. I’m taking the time to reclaim the parts of me that I thought I lost. I’m taking the time to remember that it’s okay to be me with you, but also without you. I’m not doing this to leave you. I’m doing this to come back to myself. Because I know now that in order to love you fully, I have to first learn to love myself again.
This is my journey now, a journey to rediscover who I am, to reclaim the pieces of myself that I lost. And I hope that when I do, I’ll be able to show you not just the woman I am with you, but the woman I am on my own strong, independent, and still deeply in love with you.
