The Chatroom Is the New Chatbot

It’s the room. Not the individual. Imaage by Jeff x ChatGPT

Why the next era of AI isn’t one person talking to a model — it’s a room full of people thinking with one.

Three weeks ago, I was standing in a 10x10 booth at Moscone Center during HumanX, watching a number climb on a laptop screen. By the end of day one, 141 people had signed up for Alani Connect in a single day. By the end of the conference, 490. A week later, with no ads and no booth, another 81 had found their way in on their own.

That’s not a launch story. That’s a signal.

Because the thing those 490 people signed up for wasn’t a chatbot. It wasn’t a productivity tool. It wasn’t an assistant. It was a room — a place to think, with other people and an AI, about the content they already cared about.

And that shape — the room, not the window — is, I think, the thing the AI industry has been missing.

The solo chatbot is a local maximum

For three years, the entire industry has been building the same product. One person. One model. One text box. A lonely window where you type a question and wait for a wall of tokens to come back.

It’s an extraordinary technology. It’s also a completely unnatural way for humans to think.

Good thinking is social. It happens around a dinner table, in a group chat at 11pm, in the comments on a Google Doc, in the hallway after a conference panel. It happens when a smart group of people gathers around the same thing — an essay, an episode, a deal memo, a dataset — and argues about what it means. The AI can be brilliant, but if it’s only ever talking to you, in private, with no one else in the room, you’re getting a fraction of what the technology can actually do.

Meanwhile, publishers, the people producing the essays and episodes, and the research that thinking rooms form around, are trapped in a model that gets worse every year. Spotify owns their listeners. YouTube owns their viewers. Substack owns their readers. The “community” layer is a comments section nobody reads twice. An episode drops, ten million people listen, and then the conversation ends.

Broadcast goes out. Nothing comes back.

We think both of those problems have the same answer.

What a room actually looks like

Here’s one of our most active rooms on Alani Connect: the All In Podcast room.

All In Podcast — Alani Connect Room

When a new episode drops, the room lights up. The video is embedded right into the post. Members show up not to comment, but to think — about what Chamath got right, what Sacks missed, which data point actually matters for their portfolio or their product. Alani — the AI — sits in the room with them. It ranks the insights. It pulls the data. It threads the responses. It remembers what this community cares about.

Earlier today, one of the moderators in the All-In room — a member named James Hatton — dropped this on the latest episode:

The dominant market assumption that “AI = OpenAI leadership” is likely wrong. The more durable winner is the company that turns AI into metered enterprise infrastructure, not the one with the most visible consumer product.

If Anthropic keeps outpacing in enterprise growth, especially coding, it could end up structurally stronger than OpenAI even if OpenAI has more users and brand visibility. Consumer AI hits a ceiling fast, but enterprise usage scales with work being done and money being made.

Bottom line: AI leadership is shifting from hype and users to embedded enterprise workflows and revenue per use.

Read that again. That’s not a comment. That’s a thesis. It’s the kind of thing you’d pay an analyst for. And it was written, for free, by a listener who cared enough about the episode to show up in a room full of people who cared about the same episode.

A YouTube comment dies in an hour. That post will compound for months. Other members will push back. Alani will surface it the next time someone asks about OpenAI’s enterprise strategy. It becomes a living artifact, not a dead message.

That’s the unlock. That’s what we mean when we say the chatroom is the new chatbot.

Become a moderator

The rooms that work are the ones with a moderator who genuinely loves the source material — someone who’d be in the group chat about this podcast, or this newsletter, or this conference, whether we existed or not. We’re looking for more of those people.

If you listen to All-In and you want to help moderate the room, email us. If you run a podcast, newsletter, research shop, or conference, and you want your own room on Connect, email us. If you’re just curious about what this looks like from the inside, email us.

**hello@bundleiq.com** — tell us what room you want to build.

Every technology wave starts with a shape everyone copies and ends with one that actually fits how people work. The text box is the shape everyone copied. The room is the shape we’re betting on.

Come sit at the table.
