The Truth About Comprehensive Sexuality Education: What It Really Means

The Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) bill by Sen. Risa Hontiveros has caused quite a stir, with critics worrying that it might mislead kids or encourage early sexual activity. Religious groups have also raised concerns, saying it goes against biblical principles and the Constitution.

But let’s clear things up. The updated bill now includes major revisions:

- CSE is now limited to adolescents aged 10 and above.

- The phrase “guided by international standards” has been removed.

- A new provision protecting academic and religious freedom has been added.

So, what’s the goal? It’s to educate young people — Filipino teens in particular — about reproductive health, consent, gender-based violence, and disease prevention, all in an age-appropriate way.

CSE isn’t about teaching kids to have sex. It’s about teaching them how to protect themselves. Many children don’t know what’s inappropriate or abusive, which leaves them vulnerable. Educating them early can save lives by helping them recognize harmful situations and giving them the courage to speak up.

These lessons helped me avoid teenage pregnancy and focus on my future. What’s the difference between this and implementing CSE in schools? Imagine if every student had access to this kind of education — it could be life-changing.

This bill isn’t just about preventing pregnancies or HIV, although it does that too. It’s about creating responsible, informed young people. With rising cases of teenage pregnancy, HIV, and online harassment, it’s clear that something needs to change. Families play a role, but schools can make a bigger impact by reaching more young people.
