3AM Thoughts

Have you ever woke up in the middle of your sleep, couldn’t revisit the dreamland, and just decided to savour the quietness and stillness of the silent night?
When everything fell silent, it’s always easy to hear your thoughts loud and clear. Your mind becomes sharper and all the noises that demand your attention during the day are gone. All of a sudden, a light bulb pops up on your head (like how they portrayed it in the cartoons), and you think of a solution to your problem, an idea to your ongoing project, or a different perspective to an argument that you had during the day. Midnight always hit different.
Sometimes it’s not just thoughts that appeared. Old memories, especially the nasty ones, the ones where you would want to bury 500 feet underground, resurface. It’s like a buy-1-free-1 package. The emotional weight that accompanied the memory also float back to you. However, often times, you are not bound by those emotions anymore, but rather, you’re experiencing it from a third-person view. Could it be due to the fact that you’re a more matured person now? Or maybe time heals everything, and people tend to forget? No one knows.

3AM is the time where we are the most vulnerable, the peak of our raw minds. However, with all the emotional baggage and past dusty memories mixing around, clarity could sometimes be found. We might finally come to understand that some futile choices we made should be dropped, and we should take the other better path. Or we finally set a life goal, instead of wasting our life away, we should strive to become a better self. Nonetheless, it’s the best time for us to truly understand and reflect on ourselves.
Some might blame these 3AM thoughts to overthinking, but I differ. Overthinking happens in the day, while thoughts in the night are just plain, direct, and logical. It’s more of a self-aware honest response then a conscious effort of paranoia. The honesty might feel heavy, but it’s also the starting point of acceptance and resolution, so do not reject it. Embrace it with grace, and you might finally find the beauty in those 3AM thoughts.
