  • you want to respond instead of reacting impulsively.
  • you’d like to understand the emotions and needs beneath jealousy.
  • you want healthier relationships with yourself and others.

In this article, you’ll explore the InnerBalance Jealousy Wheel and discover how understanding the emotions beneath jealousy can help you respond with greater awareness, compassion, and intention.

Why understanding jealousy matters.

Jealousy is often treated as something to suppress or be ashamed of. Yet when we understand what lies beneath it, jealousy can become a valuable source of information about our emotions, needs, and relationships.

Common misconceptions about jealousy:

  • Jealousy means there is something wrong with you.
  • Jealousy always means you don’t trust your partner.
  • Healthy people never feel jealous.

What is jealousy?

Jealousy is a complex emotional response that often points toward an unmet need, fear, or vulnerability. It often arises when we perceive a valued relationship, connection, or part of our identity to be threatened. Rather than being a single emotion, it is usually a combination of feelings such as fear, hurt, sadness, anger and shame.

Okay, so what do we do when feeling jealous?

The first step in dealing with anything is awareness.

Jealousy often feels like an emergency that demands immediate action. Simply noticing it creates a pause between the emotion and your response, giving you back the freedom to choose how you want to act.

Before trying to change, explain, or make it disappear, notice what is happening within you. Pay attention to the sensations in your body, the thoughts racing through your mind, and any urge to distract yourself, withdraw, seek reassurance, or react impulsively.

Jealousy rarely feels the same for everyone, and it may even feel different each time it arises. That’s because jealousy is not a single emotion but a complex mixture of emotional experiences. It can contain fear, hurt, sadness, anger, shame, loneliness, insecurity, and many other feelings all at once. No wonder it can feel so overwhelming and confusing.

One of the most powerful first steps is to untangle this mixture. Instead of saying, “I’m jealous,” ask yourself, “What exactly am I feeling?” Naming our emotions helps us create a little distance from them. It is an act of reclaiming the experience instead of being consumed by it.

The InnerBalance Jealousy Wheel

Why did we create the Jealousy Wheel?

At InnerBalance, we’ve noticed that many people describe jealousy as one overwhelming emotion they don’t know how to work with. Through our community conversations and reflections, we found that naming the emotions beneath jealousy often helps people understand themselves with greater compassion.

The InnerBalance Jealousy Wheel helps break one overwhelming emotion into smaller emotional experiences, underlying needs, and possible next steps. The Jealousy Wheel was created as a practical guide to support that exploration.

When should you use the Jealousy Wheel?

The first time you use the wheel, try it in a calm moment. Think back to a recent experience of jealousy and explore it with curiosity. Once you’re familiar with the wheel, it becomes much easier to use when jealousy arises in everyday life.

How to use it.

Take a few minutes to explore the Jealousy Wheel below. Start in the center with Jealousy and work your way outward. Which core emotions resonate with you (2nd ring)? Which emotional experiences describes it best (3rd ring)? The 4th ring gives one potential unmet underlying need and the 5th ring two options for a constructive response.

The bubbles below the wheel show common reactions to jealousy. These can be signs that jealousy is present. These reactions are understandable, but they rarely help us move forward. Look which ones are familiar to you. They don’t serve to judge you, they serve to create more awareness.

The wheel is designed to help you untangle what can otherwise feel like one overwhelming emotion and put words to your inner experience. This gives us the opportunity to respond with greater awareness instead of reacting automatically.

Write down what applies, or if you can print the wheel: mark the fields that apply.

If you want to go one step further — you can assign percentages to the different emotions. What is your personal mixture of jealousy? 40% Fear, 30% Hurt 10%, Anger, 10% Sadness, 10% Shame?

This way you can also notice differences or similarities between different experiences of jealousy.

The InnerBalance Jealousy Wheel is designed to help you put words to your inner experience. By recognising the emotions, needs, and behavioural patterns beneath jealousy, it becomes easier to understand what the feeling is trying to tell you. Use it as a guide and a starting point for your own exploration, and feel free to adapt or expand it based on your own experience.

Jealousy does not always announce itself by saying, “Hey here is jealousy.” Instead, it often appears through familiar patterns. When they show up, use them as signs that are pointing you towards something deeper. They can have different causes than jealousy, yet they are valuable clues that invite us to look more closely at what is happening within us.

From understanding to connection.

Many of us have learned healthy ways to cope with sadness, fear, or anger. But when it comes to jealousy, we often don’t know where to begin. Understanding the emotions and underlying needs of your individual experience makes it easier to address and communicate what you need.

Sharing those deeper emotions with someone you trust can make a remarkable difference. It is much easier for others to support you when they understand what you are experiencing and what you need. Sometimes another person’s perspective can help us recognize patterns and ways of thinking that are difficult to see on our own.

When shame arises…

If you notice shame arising as you explore or talk about your jealousy, it is a hint that you are not fully understanding or accepting it. Try to meet even the shame with kindness. It often tells us that we believe we shouldn’t be feeling this way. Yet shaming our emotions only pushes them further into the background, making growth and genuine connection more difficult.

It is okay to feel jealous. It is okay to feel ashamed of being jealous. How could we be expected to understand an emotion that so few of us were ever taught to understand? Most of us grow up learning very little about what jealousy is, where it comes from, or what it is trying to tell us. That is exactly why we chose “The Wisdom in Jealousy” as the theme for the month July: to bring a little more understanding, compassion, and light to one of our most misunderstood emotions.

Key takeaway.

Jealousy is rarely the problem itself. More often, it is a signal pointing toward deeper emotions, unmet needs, or vulnerabilities. The more clearly you can recognize those underlying experiences, the more freedom you have to respond with awareness, compassion, and intention.
