Paris Mayor Faces Criticism Over Olympic Transport Readiness and ‘Tahitigate’ Controversy

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has stirred controversy by admitting that the city’s transport system won’t be ready for the 2024 Olympic Games, prompting backlash from political opponents. Hidalgo acknowledged the challenges during an appearance on the Quotidien talk show, emphasizing that while the Games infrastructure will be complete, the transport and homelessness issues persist. She cited ongoing problems with daily transport, lacking comfort, and punctuality in certain areas.

Criticism intensified as Hidalgo faced allegations of neglecting her duties during an extended vacation following an official trip to a French Pacific territory. Dubbed “Tahitigate,” critics accused her of concealing her absence through social media posts featuring old pictures, including a cycling video in Paris.

Transport Minister Clement Beaune criticized her non-participation in meetings related to transport infrastructure, highlighting a lack of respect for public officials and Parisians. In contrast, Valerie Pecresse, head of the Ile-de-France region, expressed gratitude to transport staff and emphasized the collective effort to ensure readiness for the Olympics.

Hidalgo also addressed the homelessness situation, viewing the Olympics as an opportunity to find long-term solutions. However, challenges persist, and she admitted more progress is needed. The controversy underscores concerns and tensions leading up to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
