When Appraisals Hurt More Than They Help 💭💔

Appraisals are supposed to motivate us — at least that’s what every company claims. But what happens when the appraisal you waited for all year ends up disappointing you so deeply that it shakes your confidence? What happens when it becomes the reason you question your worth, skills, stability, goals, and even your future?

This is my story — raw, honest, and very real.

The Build-Up: That One Email We All Wait For

Every year, around appraisal month, the office energy changes. Slack pings feel louder. HR becomes mysteriously active. Managers suddenly start adding “Let’s sync” to calendar invites.

And like everyone else, I had my own silent optimism.

I wasn’t expecting magic. I wasn’t expecting a huge number. But I was expecting acknowledgment — something that said:

“Yes, your work mattered.”

After all, I had taken on additional responsibilities, solved urgent problems at midnight, managed stressful client issues, and even helped my teammates during crunch time. The year wasn’t easy, but I showed up — consistently.

I thought the appraisal would reflect that. But life doesn’t always follow our expectations.

The Moment Everything Broke

My appraisal came in late evening. I opened the email with a tiny smile — half nervous, half hopeful. And then I stared at the screenA number so small… it felt like a joke. I read it again. And again. My mind kept rejecting it. I felt something sink inside me. Not sadness. Not anger. Just… disappointment so heavy that it silently crushed my motivation.

And the worst part? I thought, “Maybe I didn’t deserve better.”

That one thought hurt more than the appraisal itself.

The Emotional Spiral Nobody Talks About

When an appraisal demotivates you, it doesn’t just stay in that one moment — it leaks into everything:

  • You stop feeling excited about work.
  • You stop volunteering for tasks.
  • Every meeting feels draining.
  • Every compliment sounds fake.
  • Every morning feels heavier.

I found myself avoiding Slack messages. Avoiding team discussions. Avoiding everything that once made me feel productive.

But the most painful part? I began doubting myself — a lot.

And self-doubt is a dangerous place to be.

A Small Story: The Breakroom Conversation

Two days after my appraisal, I overheard a conversation in the breakroom.

Someone said, “Man, even mine came low, but at least I got something.”

Another replied, “HR didn’t even understand what I actually do.”

For the first time, I realized: It wasn’t just me. Everyone was silently carrying their own disappointment. Appraisals don’t demotivate “one person.” They demotivate teams. And sometimes, entire workplaces. We just never talk about it openly.

Where It Hit Me the Hardest

The hardest part wasn’t the number. It was when people asked:

“So, how much of a hike did you get?” And I had to smile and say, “Haha… it’s just normal.” That fake laugh felt heavier than anything.

The Phase of Avoidance

I started avoiding taking new challenges because somewhere deep inside, I felt:

“What’s the point?”

Why go the extra mile when the company only sees the starting point?

I wasn’t being negative — just human.

Healing & Realization: What I Learned

After weeks of overthinking, journaling, and talking to friends, here’s what I realized:

Healing & Realization: What I Learned

Healing & Realization: What I Learned

1. My appraisal doesn’t define my value

A number based on unknown KPIs, rushed evaluations, and office politics cannot measure my skills, creativity, growth, or potential.

2. Companies don’t always reflect real contribution

Sometimes managers change, metrics change, or budgets shrink. Your effort rarely equals your appraisal.

3. My real growth is in my hands

I decided to:

  • Learn new skills
  • Strengthen my portfolio
  • Update my LinkedIn
  • Start preparing for better opportunities
  • Work on personal projects

The moment I shifted focus from company validation to self-validation, everything changed.

4. Quiet quitting is real — but self-growth is more powerful

I didn’t quit the job. I quit attaching my worth to a yearly number.

Another Story: A Message from a Colleague

Weeks later, a colleague randomly messaged me:

“I felt exactly like you. But trust me — next company will value you better.”

He had switched jobs last year after a bad appraisal and got double salary elsewhere.

His message felt like a soft reminder: Bad appraisals don’t end careers — they redirect them.

Appraisal Pain → Motivation Shift ✨

Once the emotional fog cleared, I started focusing on real growth.

  • I learned things I had postponed.
  • I became open to better job opportunities.
  • I started valuing my time more.
  • I understood what burnout really feels like
  • I learned how important recognition is for mental health.

A painful appraisal became my wake-up call.

And honestly? I’m grateful for that.

So… Does an Appraisal Demotivate You?

Yes. It does. And it’s okay.

You’re not weak. You’re human.

What’s important is what happens after that disappointment.

Use it as a shift, not an ending.

Because sometimes a small hike opens the door to a bigger future.

Before you leave, I want to hear from you:

Have you ever felt demotivated after an appraisal? Did it change your behaviour or career plans?
