Sonam Wangchuk and the people of Ladakh have been protesting peacefully for many days for the Sixth Schedule, which was already mentioned in the ruling party’s manifesto. They are not asking for anything new, illegal, or against the nation. They are only asking for what was promised — constitutional protection for Ladakh’s land, people, culture, and environment.

Ladakh is a spiritual land, environmentally fragile and culturally unique. The demand for the Sixth Schedule is meant to protect tribal rights, local resources, and the future of the region. Still, the government has not given what was promised. This raises serious questions: Who is running the government? Who is making the policies? What do they want from the spiritual land of Ladakh?

Nationwide Support Ignored

What makes Sonam Wangchuk’s arrest even more painful and alarming is that this is not the first time the nation stood with him. Earlier, people across the country supported his environmental movement. Students, educators, climate activists, retired professionals, and ordinary citizens openly backed his call to protect Ladakh’s fragile ecology.

Many Indians travelled to Ladakh to understand the issue firsthand and express solidarity. Others joined protests in their own cities. A historic padayatra from Ladakh to New Delhi was undertaken — peaceful, disciplined, and democratic — just to draw the government’s attention to environmental protection and constitutional safeguards. There was no violence, no hatred, no anti-national slogan — only concern for the future.

Yet, despite nationwide support and months of peaceful protest, Ladakh’s people did not get what was promised.

Now, instead of dialogue, Sonam Wangchuk has been arrested.

Arrest and Use of NSA

Yes, Ladakh activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk was arrested in September 2025 under the National Security Act (NSA) following protests in Leh. Authorities claimed his speeches incited unrest that led to violence and deaths, but his wife and supporters have strongly challenged these allegations. They view this as a politically motivated detention linked to his demands for Ladakh’s statehood and constitutional rights.

He was transferred to Jodhpur Central Jail, far away from Ladakh, and his detention is currently being challenged in the Supreme Court.

If he is really a threat, why doesn’t the government make everything transparent? Why use NSA? Why hide facts? Why silence dialogue instead of answering constitutional demands?

Who Is He a Threat To?

This forces us to ask: Who exactly thinks he is a threat — and why?

Sonam Wangchuk is not a threat to the nation. He is a threat only to:

• Governments that avoid accountability
• Big corporations that fear environmental safeguards
• Systems uncomfortable with educated, independent thinkers

As an educated and responsible human being, he is doing exactly what a true citizen should do — question power, protect nature, educate the youth, and propose practical solutions. Calling such a person a “national security threat” is not only unjust, it is dangerous for democracy.

Silencing him will not protect India. Listening to him might.

Why He Is Feared

There are still no universities or schools like HIAL and SECMOL in India. He gave ideas and solutions that many leaders never did for our country. He believes in free thinking, practical education, sustainability, and innovation. That is why he influences so many people — especially the youth.

People with wisdom and knowledge, who genuinely try to do something for the country, are being silenced. This is becoming a dangerous pattern.

Meanwhile, Gitanjali J Angmo, his wife, continues to patiently and courageously explain the facts on social media and is also fighting the case in court. Her efforts deserve public support, not indifference. Standing with her means standing with truth, transparency, and the belief that innovation should be protected — not punished.

This Is the Moment

At this moment, silence equals consent. If people who stand for knowledge, sustainability, and constitutional rights are crushed, tomorrow no honest voice will feel safe.

We supported him before. We must support him now — more strongly than ever.

Release Sonam Wangchuk. Protect Ladakh. Protect free thinking. Protect democracy.
