Projekt Ilaiyaraaja Season III — 344/365 — Nenje Gurunatharin

Mogamul is a treasure trove when it comes to the use of rare raagas by Ilaiyaraaja. If Kamala Padha Kamalam was in Ramapriya, the song that I have chosen today is another rare raga called Natakapriya (also the name of S Ve Shekher’s drama troupe).

The song is depicted when the lead character (played by Abhishek) guru (played by Nedumudi Venu) is in deathbed and he asks money from a local Zamindar to help his guru. The Zamindar asks him to sing for a drinks party and the song depicts his plight and his dedication to the guru.

There are two versions of the song with MG Sreekumar and the movie version is with Arun Mozhi. The interludes evoke the pathos with a mix of violins and veena.
