The Sheep Detectives (2026): A Brilliant Twist on Cozy Mystery and Woolly Whodunits

What would happen if Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) from Rian Johnson’s Knives Out was replaced by a flock of sheep? This movie delivers on that exact, bizarrely unique premise. The Sheep Detectives (2026) tells the story of a shepherd who spends almost all of his time dedicated solely to his livestock. Having distanced himself from society, he chooses to live a solitary life in a van right in the middle of his pasture. Naturally, his sheep are more than happy to always be by their shepherd’s side.

However, that peace is instantly shattered when they find him dead under mysterious circumstances. One of the sheep named Lily — the smartest of the flock — realizes that their master’s death is far from natural. Is it murder? Who did it? What is the killer’s motive? And just like that, the adventure of the Detective Sheep begins.

Just like any standard detective film, the audience is constantly forced to rack their brains trying to guess who the actual killer is from start to finish. What makes this film stand out and feel so incredibly refreshing, though, is how every single clue is gathered and pieced together by a flock of sheep. Much like humans, the sheep here possess their own distinct traits, egos, and personalities, all of which are explored in a very organic way. This character-driven approach is exactly what makes the entire investigation feel so unique, fresh, and genuinely fun.

The dramatic elements aren’t just limited to the surface-level bond between humans and animals either. Going much deeper than that, the film dives into the backstories of both the human suspects and the sheep themselves. Everyone gets their own fair share of emotional depth, which successfully leaves the audience feeling unexpectedly mellow once those pasts are uncovered.

Furthermore, the execution of the third act — where the killer is finally unmasked — is flawless. As someone who hasn’t read the source material book, the grand reveal at the end delivered a plot twist I genuinely didn’t see coming. Kyle Balda (the director) did a brilliant job hiding the motives and breadcrumbs from the beginning through the mid-section, making the conclusion feel genuinely shocking yet thoroughly satisfying.

On the acting front, this film boasts an A-list cast whose talent goes without saying. You have Hugh Jackman playing the quiet shepherd and Nicholas Braun as the town’s only local police officer. I mean, when else are we ever going to see Wolverine sharing the screen with Cousin Greg from Succession?

That being said, I do have a minor nitpick regarding their performances. Nicholas Braun still feels a bit too tied down by the awkward, bumbling mannerisms of Greg that he’s famous for playing. On the flip side, Hugh Jackman undergoes a total transformation. He pulls off a incredibly fragile and deeply human performance — so much so that you completely forget he’s the same guy who plays the fierce, claw-wielding Wolverine.

The Sheep Detectives is a highly successful experiment in the cozy mystery genre. It perfectly proves that the classic whodunit formula can still be incredibly entertaining when executed with a bold and daring concept. This is a must-watch for anyone who loves a lighthearted, puzzle-solving mystery but still wants to walk away with genuine emotional depth and a heartwarming drama by the time the credits roll.
