Rhino × GIS Begins With Choosing a Reference Frame

In that article, I discussed different workflows for handling location information within Rhino × GIS projects.
At first glance, the topic appears to be about georeferencing. However, I do not think the real question is where a model should be georeferenced.
The more fundamental question is:
What should be treated as the reference frame for understanding space?
When working primarily in Rhino, it is natural to begin with geometry. The model becomes the centre of attention, while the surrounding environment is introduced as context. Location information helps us understand how a design relates to its surroundings, but the design itself remains the starting point.
From a GIS perspective, the relationship is reversed. Terrain, infrastructure, regulations, and existing conditions become the primary frame of reference. The model is then positioned within that larger context.
Interestingly, both approaches may ultimately produce the same coordinates. The model may end up in exactly the same location.
Yet the way we arrive there is fundamentally different.
One approach begins with geometry and expands outward.
The other begins with context and moves inward.
This distinction is easy to overlook because discussions about Rhino × GIS often focus on software, workflows, data formats, or coordinate systems. These topics are certainly important, but they are not where the most important decisions are made.
Before any workflow begins, we have already decided what we consider to be fixed and what we consider to be variable.
We have already decided what deserves our attention first.
We have already chosen a reference frame.
That choice influences how we interpret information, how we structure a workflow, and ultimately how we understand space itself.
This article extends the line of thinking developed in the previous three articles in this series. Perhaps the value of Rhino × GIS does not lie in connecting two software environments. Perhaps its value lies in allowing us to move between different reference frames and to understand when each perspective is appropriate.
Space is not defined by geometry alone. Nor is it defined by context alone.
The challenge is understanding which one should become the starting point for a particular problem.
When approaching a design challenge, do we begin with the geometry we intend to create, or with the context in which it will exist?
Perhaps Rhino × GIS begins with answering that question.

Rhino × GIS

Rhino × GIS
Rhino × GIS
