How to Write a Critical Analysis Essay at University Level

One of the most commonly requested skills in university assessment briefs is critical analysis, yet it remains to be least understood. Papers submitted by students are often descriptive rather than analytical, summarising rather than evaluating, presenting information rather than interrogative. The key to writing work which meets the expectations of academic markers is to first understand what critical analysis really involves.

In its simplest form, critical analysis entails evaluating a work, a statement, a theory, or a collection of facts, then drawing conclusions concerning its positive, negative, and value aspects. It is inadequate to simply explain what a source says. It is anticipated of the student at university level to read that source, challenge its assumptions, put it in context, and compare it with other viewpoints. This is a very different activity from what most students did at secondary school.

The excessive use of description is one of the most frequent mistake in critical analysis essays. One student might take three paragraphs to describe the argument of a theorist in considerable details, only to add a single sentence at the end that other researchers have criticised the theorist’s specific opinion. This frame indicates to a marker that the student has mastered the material but is yet to acquire the analytical skills that the assignment demands. Description and analysis have to used together and not separated into various sections.

Another challenge is the tendency to put forward several perspectives without necessarily taking a stance. Good critical analysis is not just a compilation of what other scholars have said. It constructs an argument by demonstrating the relationships between those views to each other, where they are similar, where they diverge, and what conclusions can be drawn out of the tension that exists between the two. A student who presents five separate views without relating them and making any analytical conclusions has made a complex summary, and not critical analysis.

Structure is a major factor in the readability of a critical analysis essay. Every paragraph must have its purpose in the general argument. The introduction should establish the question or the problem under discussion, providing the position of analysis which the essay will assume. Each body paragraph should proceed that argument a step further with the introduction of evidence, critical analysis of the evidence, and its connection to the key thesis. The conclusion will be a summary of the key issues and not a reiteration of previously mentioned issues.
