When the Walls Finally Fall: What Joshua 6:20 Teaches Us About Faith

“So the people shouted, and the priests blew the trumpets. When the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat…” — Joshua 6:20

Have you ever prayed for something for so long that you began wondering whether God was even listening?

Maybe you have been waiting for an opportunity.

Waiting for financial breakthrough.

Waiting for healing.

Waiting for a relationship to work out.

Waiting for a door to open.

And despite all your prayers, nothing seems to change.

Then you read Joshua 6:20 and are reminded of something powerful:

Just because you cannot see the wall falling does not mean God is not working.

The Israelites had a wall standing between them and the promise God had given them. Jericho was heavily fortified. Humanly speaking, there was no obvious way for them to bring it down.

But God gave them an unusual instruction.

They were not told to build a bigger army.

They were not told to create better weapons.

They were told to walk around the city, obey His instructions, and wait.

And then, at the appointed moment, they shouted.

And the wall fell.

The Wall Was Real

One important thing about this story is that the wall wasn’t imaginary.

The Israelites weren’t pretending that Jericho was easy to conquer.

There was a genuine obstacle standing in their way.

Sometimes we can become frustrated with ourselves because our obstacles haven’t disappeared.

But faith doesn’t mean pretending that your problems don’t exist.

Faith means believing that your problem is not bigger than your God.

You can acknowledge the wall and still believe it will fall.

You can recognize the difficulty and still have hope.

You can be afraid and still obey.

God Sometimes Gives Instructions That Don’t Make Sense

Imagine being one of the Israelites.

You look at Jericho.

You see massive walls.

You have an army ready for battle.

And then your instruction is:

Walk around it.

Again.

And again.

And again.

For six days.

Nothing appears to happen.

No cracks.

No collapse.

No visible progress.

Just walking.

This is where many people struggle with faith.

We want immediate results.

God may give us an instruction, but because we don’t see immediate evidence, we assume nothing is happening.

But the Israelites had to learn something important:

Obedience does not become pointless simply because the results are delayed.

Sometimes your assignment is not to understand everything God is doing.

Sometimes your assignment is simply to obey the next instruction.

The Shout Came Before the Wall Fell

This may be one of the most powerful details in the entire passage.

Joshua 6:20 says the people shouted, and then the wall fell.

Their shout wasn’t a response to the wall falling.

It was an expression of faith before they saw the result.

That’s powerful.

Because many of us say:

“I’ll believe when I see it.”

But biblical faith often works differently.

Faith says:

“I don’t see it yet, but I trust the One who promised it.”

The Israelites didn’t need to see the wall collapsing before they obeyed.

They trusted God’s word first.

Your Silence Doesn’t Mean God Has Forgotten You

Perhaps you are currently in a season that feels like Jericho.

You have prayed.

You have worked.

You have tried.

You have waited.

Yet the wall is still standing.

Don’t automatically assume that nothing is happening.

There are seasons when God is preparing you before changing your circumstances.

There are seasons when your character is being developed before your opportunity arrives.

There are seasons when obedience matters more than visible progress.

The absence of immediate results doesn’t necessarily mean the absence of God’s activity.

Keep Walking

The Israelites didn’t walk around Jericho once and give up.

They kept walking.

That is a lesson many of us desperately need.

Keep applying for the job.

Keep building your business.

Keep studying.

Keep praying.

Keep improving.

Keep showing up.

Keep obeying God.

Keep walking.

You may not know which lap you’re currently on.

It could be your first.

It could be your sixth.

You simply don’t know.

But quitting before the appointed moment means you may never see what happens on the final lap.

Your Wall Is Not Your Final Destination

Jericho looked permanent.

But it wasn’t.

The wall that appeared impossible to overcome eventually fell.

And that’s the encouragement of Joshua 6:20.

The obstacle in front of you does not have the authority to determine your future.

Your circumstances may be difficult today.

Your finances may not look the way you want them to.

Your career may not have taken off yet.

Your prayers may seem unanswered.

Your dream may appear distant.

But don’t confuse delay with denial.

Sometimes God is asking you to keep walking.

Keep trusting.

Keep obeying.

Keep believing.

Because there may come a moment when the thing you have been staring at for months or years suddenly changes.

And when it does, you’ll realize that every step mattered.

What Should You Do While You’re Waiting?

If you are currently facing your own “Jericho,” remember three things:

1. Don’t let the size of the wall determine the size of your faith.

Your obstacle may be large, but God is greater.

2. Don’t abandon obedience because you don’t see immediate results.

Results are not always visible while the process is happening.

3. Don’t stop walking simply because the wall hasn’t fallen yet.

Your responsibility is faithfulness.

God’s responsibility is the outcome.

One Day, the Wall Will Fall

Joshua 6:20 isn’t simply a story about an ancient city.

It is a reminder that God can accomplish what human strength cannot.

The Israelites couldn’t knock down Jericho through ordinary means.

But they followed God’s instructions.

They walked.

They waited.

They obeyed.

They shouted.

And the wall fell.

Maybe your wall hasn’t fallen yet.

That’s okay.

Keep walking.

Keep trusting God.

Keep doing what He has called you to do.

Because sometimes the greatest miracle isn’t just what happens when the wall falls.

It’s who you become while you’re walking around it.

And when the moment finally comes, you’ll look back and understand:

God was working even when I couldn’t see it.

If you’re standing in front of a wall today, don’t give up simply because it hasn’t moved.

Pray.

Obey.

Work.

Wait.

Trust.

And keep walking.

The wall may be standing today, but it doesn’t have to stand forever.
