Apple’s 2025 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5): A Leap into the AI Era
Apple has just updated its 14‑inch MacBook Pro with the new M5 chip, bringing “the next big leap in AI for the Mac”. Externally, the laptop looks identical to the previous model (same flat-edge design, notch display and port layout), but inside it’s packed with upgraded silicon and features. The M5 system-on-chip delivers a 10‑core CPU (4 high‑power + 6 efficiency cores), a 10‑core GPU with 3rd-generation ray tracing, and a 16‑core Neural Engine, now with a Neural Accelerator built into each GPU. In real-world terms, this means much faster on‑device AI and graphics.
Apple claims up to 3.5 faster AI performance and 1.6x faster graphics than the prior generation. The new MacBook Pro still offers the same stunning 14.2‑inch Liquid Retina XDR display (mini-LED, 3024x1964, 120 Hz ProMotion), a 12MP Center Stage webcam, a six‑speaker Spatial Audio sound system, and all the familiar ports (MagSafe 3, 3x Thunderbolt 4 (USB‑C), HDMI 2.1, SDXC, and audio jack). Apple also touts phenomenal battery life of up to 24 hours of video playback on a charge.
What’s New Under the Hood
- M5 Chip Specs: 10‑core CPU, 10‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine (3 nm process). Each of the GPU cores includes a built-in neural accelerator for AI, akin to NVIDIA’s Tensor Cores.
- Graphics & Ray Tracing: New third-generation ray tracing support accelerates complex visuals (e.g. lifelike reflections in games). Apple says M5 graphics can be up to 1.6x faster than M4, and benchmarks show roughly 30–45% higher GPU throughput. Sustained gaming is surprisingly quiet and cool thanks to efficient cooling.
- AI Performance: Huge gains for on-device AI workflows. With neural accelerators on every GPU core and a faster Neural Engine, the M5 delivers up to 3.5x the AI performance of M4, and about 6x that of the original M1. This means tasks like local image generation or running large language models happen significantly faster.
- Memory & Storage: The unified memory bandwidth jumps to 153 GB/s (versus 120 GB/s on M4), making multitasking smoother. Storage is also upgraded: base SSD is now up to 4 TB (previously 2 TB), and Apple claims up to 2x faster SSD. Reviewers measured >6000 MB/s write and ~7000 MB/s read speed, which is a dramatic improvement.
- Battery & Charging: Still an all‑day runner. Apple rates up to 24 hours of video playback or about 16 hours of web use. In testing, users report a full day of typical work on a charge. And fast charging is supported, charging the device by 50% in 30 minutes with the 96 W USB‑C power adapter.
Performance Boosts
Compared to the prior M4-based 14-inch model, the M5’s improvements are moderate on CPU but substantial for graphics and AI:
- CPU: AppleInsider finds about a 16% multi-core speedup over M4. Wired’s benchmarks show an ~11% jump in single-core (Cinebench score 200 vs M4’s ~180). In everyday work you’ll notice slightly snappier responsiveness, but it’s an iterative update rather than a revolution.
- GPU: The M5’s GPU is the star. Geekbench Compute scores jump from ~57,900 (M4) to ~76,500 (M5). Mark Ellis notes “up to 45% faster graphics performance” and full hardware ray tracing for Mac gaming. Video editors will see quicker renders and real‑time previews, and games like Resident Evil Village can run at playable framerates natively.
- AI (Neural): With a Neural Engine on every GPU core, on‑device AI workloads are dramatically faster. Apple’s own benchmarks (and GQ’s report) suggest 3 to 3.5x faster AI model performance over M4. In some cases, like running a local image-generation model, the M5 blitzes through tasks in seconds that took much longer on older Macs. Note, however, that benefits will grow as more apps update to use the new hardware.
- Multitasking: Thanks to 153 GB/s memory bandwidth and up to 32 GB RAM, the M5 Pro handles heavy multitasking with ease. Reviewers report no slowdowns with dozens of tabs open, big Photoshop files, or video exports. TechRadar even notes the dreaded macOS beachball (“pinwheel”) disappeared under heavy Chrome use.
Smooth Everyday Experience
In day‑to‑day use, the 14″ M5 MacBook Pro is remarkably smooth and responsive. Tasks like web browsing, email, coding, and content creation all benefit from the extra bandwidth and graphics power. For example, Lance Ulanoff (TechRadar) reports that even with dozens of Chrome tabs and apps open, the M5 system never ground to a halt. Video editing and photo work “continue to be impressively powerful” on Apple Silicon. Users also get all‑day battery life: Apple’s 24‑hour claim holds up in practice, with reviewers achieving well over a full working day off power. When needed, the machine fast‑charges quickly (roughly half battery in 30 minutes).
Design, Display and Features
- Unchanged Design: The chassis is the same sleek aluminum unibody we’ve had since 2021. It’s fairly slim (0.61″ thick) but not as thin as an Air. The classic MagSafe 3 charger returns, alongside three Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports, a full‑size HDMI 2.1 port, an SD‑XC card slot, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. You still get a glass Force Touch trackpad and a surprisingly quiet and comfortable keyboard.
- Display: A beautiful 14.2″ Liquid Retina XDR panel (mini‑LED backlit) with rounded corners and a notch for the webcam. It supports full 120 Hz ProMotion and very high brightness (up to ~1600 nits HDR peak) with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. For outdoor use, a matte “nano-texture” glass option is available (for an extra $150). Critics still call this one of the best laptop screens on the market, only lacking in that it’s not yet OLED.
- Camera & Audio: A 12 MP FaceTime camera with Center Stage autofocus (1080p video) make this Apple’s best webcam yet. The six-speaker sound system is “bassy, full, loud, and crystal clear,” with Spatial Audio support, bested only by the 16″ MacBook Pro’s speakers. There’s still no Face ID; Touch ID is in the power button for logins.
- Environment: Like its predecessors, this MacBook Pro uses 100% recycled aluminum in the enclosure and 45% recycled materials by weight, and ships in fully recyclable fiber packaging.
Who Should Upgrade?
The new 14″ M5 MacBook Pro is essentially an internal refresh of the entry‑level Pro model. If you currently own an older Intel‑based or M1/M2 MacBook Pro, the M5 offers huge generational gains — especially in AI and graphics. Intel-era users might see dozens of times faster AI performance and many-fold GPU boosts. Even M1 owners get roughly 2x CPU speed and 6x AI gains. However, if you already have last year’s M4 MacBook Pro (or an M4 Pro/Max), the difference is more modest: modest CPU gains (~10–20%) and more substantial GPU/AI gains.
Importantly, this update only applies to the 14‑inch base model. There are currently no M5 chips for the 16″ Pro or higher-end “Pro/Max” versions — those still use M4 Pro/Max silicon until Apple releases M5 versions next year. Also keep in mind that a new MacBook Air (M5) is expected soon, likely at a lower price. Wired even suggests that for most people, the M4 Air or M4 Pro model is plenty powerful and more affordable.
In short: Tech enthusiasts, creators and developers working with AI or graphics will love the M5’s extra headroom. Casual users or those on a budget might wait or consider the current M4 models. As Robert Leedham (GQ) puts it, Apple’s pushing to “get its laptops ahead of the AI curve in one generational leap”. If that sounds like a need for your workflow, this new MacBook Pro delivers.
