What is PgMP?
The Program Management Professional (PgMP) is an expert certification created by PMI. It is a specialized training for Program Management Professionals to develop and enhance their ability to handle multiple complex programs.
PgMP focuses on training program managers to lead and efficiently execute programs from start to a successful finish. Therefore, it is only reserved for senior project managers, program managers, and other management professionals who already have a level of experience in the field.
Why PgMP?
PMI is a globally acknowledged institute that has been authorizing certifications for program managers to strategize the management of interlinked programs towards long-term organizational goals. A PgMP certification is often the next step for PMP-certified individuals.
As of 2023, the PMI has reported that there are only 5035 active PgMPs in the world, which means there is a huge demand for PgMP-certified program managers. Recruiters worldwide are aware of how paramount it is to have an expert program manager for acquiring overall organizational growth. PgMP certification is exactly the credential that verifies a program manager’s competency in their field.
PgMP Exam
The pgm Content Outline (ECO) includes real-world aligned practices that are relevant to the current times. It has been revised by PMI to suit a program manager’s industry demands, transforming them into a formidable leader in their field.
The pedagogy adapted supports both online and offline training. The ECO curriculum and process of certification involves 5 Domains, 72 Tasks, and 126 Knowledge points. These are divided into sub-domains and learning objectives that the candidate has to learn in a mandatory 21-hour training.
Once you’ve completed the training, you can apply for the PgMP Exam audit, where the panel will review your application and approve it if you fit all eligibility criteria.
Eligibility
The PMI has set a few PgMP prerequisites for the candidates interested in PgMP to meet before applying for the certificate. These eligibility criteria consider the education and experience of the aspirant. Though, first and foremost, it is important to know that the PMI only allows experienced professionals to enroll for the PgMP examination. The educational and experience-based criteria are further bifurcated by the degree the candidate holds.
Four-Year Degree Holders
For candidates with a Bachelor’s equivalent or higher degree, it is required to have 48 months (4 years) of prior program management experience.
Or the alternative is to have 48 months (4 years) of project management experience. But if you have a PMP certification, then you immediately qualify for the PgMP certificate examination.
Secondary Degree
For secondary degree holders, i.e., high school diploma, associate’s degree, or any other global equivalent, you’ll need to have accumulated 84 months (8 years) of program management experience.
Or you have the option to complete 48 months (4 years) of project management experience, or PMP certification (acquiring which the experience criteria are already met).
PgMP Certification Process
As PgMP is an advanced certification, the eligibility, application process, and examination are a bit trickier than the other PMI certificates. To become a program manager professional, the process mentioned below is to be followed:
Get the training
Before applying for the PgMP certification, you need to undergo mandatory 21 hours of training. In the training, you will get to learn various domains, techniques, and processes for passing the exam, which includes multiple real-life situation-based questions. Only after acquiring the training can you put forth your application for the panel to review.
Submit Your Application
As explained in the eligibility section above, the candidates are required to gather 4 years of project management experience or a minimum of 4 to 8 years of program management experience.
Further on, during the application, you must submit document proof of having worked on programs or separate projects as required by the PMI eligibility standards. You must also offer the details of the projects and programs you’ve worked on, like the duration, objectives, role, and responsibilities undertaken, summary, etc., of the project or programs managed.
Fees and Panel Review
Once you’ve submitted their application, an official panel group of PMI, which consists of a team of industry expert program managers, will review it. If the application meets all the criteria, the panel will approve it. You’ll then have to make the required payment.
Schedule the Exam
The next step of getting your PMP certification is to schedule an exam on the Pearson VUE platform. You will further receive the detailed information in your registered email, and accordingly, your exam will be scheduled.
Give the PgMP Exam
After the previous steps, the final one is to give the exam and ace it! PgMP is a center-based test, meaning that you will be proctored for the examination. The exam includes 170 multiple-choice questions and will be 240 minutes long. There will be a 15-minute tutorial before the exam and a 15-minute survey post. Making the exam a total of 270 minutes.
