Moringa oleifera is a fast‑growing deciduous tree from the foothills of the Indian Himalayas, now naturalised across much of the tropics. Its feathery leaves, fragrant cream flowers, and long “drumstick” seed pods have earned it names like the drumstick tree, “miracle tree”, and in Sanskrit, Shobhanjana “that which beautifies”. Almost every part of the plant has a documented traditional use, but the dried leaves are the focus of modern supplements and nearly all clinical research.

Nutritionally, moringa leaf stands out for its naturally occurring vitamins and minerals : including beta‑carotene (vitamin A), vitamin C, vitamin K, several B vitamins, iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Alongside this micronutrient profile, it contains flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, chlorogenic acid, and a distinctive isothiocyanate (moringin) that has attracted attention in laboratory studies. Combined, these features make moringa unusual: its strongest case is nutritional density rather than a single “hero” compound.

Historically, moringa appears in classical Ayurvedic texts like the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita as Shobhanjana, with distinct roles for leaves, pods, seeds, flowers, roots, and bark. It was later carried across the tropics, integrated into multiple traditional medicine systems, and, from the mid‑20th century, promoted by NGOs as a potential tool for micronutrient security. In Ayurveda, moringa is described as pungent, bitter, light, and warming, primarily balancing kapha and vata, with leaves used as daily food and tonic and roots and bark reserved for targeted therapeutic contexts.

From the 2000s onwards, human trials have explored moringa leaf for glycaemic markers, lipid markers, antioxidant status, inflammation, and broader nutritional endpoints. Reviews by Mbikay (2012), Stohs and Hartman (2015), and Leone (2015) summarise a growing but uneven evidence base: most studies are small (often 40–100 participants), short (4–12 weeks), and use 1.5–6 g of dried leaf daily. Reported benefits are generally modest and not yet confirmed in large, independent Western trials, so “superfood” marketing tends to run ahead of the data.

In practice, moringa leaf is used as a cooked vegetable, dried powder, tea, or capsules. As a food supplement in the UK, it sits under food law rather than medicines regulation. Leaf is generally well tolerated, but root, bark, and seed are avoided in pregnancy; people on warfarin, glucose‑lowering medication, or with thyroid conditions should seek medical advice before use and stop if any adverse effects occur.
