AI doesn’t ‘understand’ anything. It recognises patterns. Big difference.

You ask ChatGPT a question. It gives you a brilliant answer. You think: “Wow, it really gets me.” It doesn’t. AI processes billions of text examples and calculates, "When humans see these words, they typically respond with these words.” It’s sophisticated pattern matching, not comprehension. A child understands why fire is hot. AI just knows the word “fire” statistically correlates with “hot” and “danger” in training data. This distinction matters when we start trusting AI for judgement calls, medical diagnoses, or legal advice. Pattern recognition is incredibly powerful. But it’s not wisdom. It’s not context. It’s not understanding. We’re confusing statistical correlation with actual intelligence. And that confusion has consequences.
