If you’ve been looking at getting away from VMware — or maybe you’re just done with the licensing maze — you’ve probably bumped into two big names: Proxmox VE and XCP-ng. Both are open-source, both are powerful, and both have their own flavor of how virtualization should work. Choosing between them isn’t always straightforward, so here’s a rundown of how they stack up, from the lens of real-world use, comfort level, and long-term flexibility.

Proxmox: The Swiss Army Knife Built on Debian

Proxmox VE feels like it was designed by sysadmins who just wanted to get things done without fuss. If you’re coming from a Linux background — especially Debian or Ubuntu — it’ll feel like home.

Some standout things about Proxmox:

  • KVM and LXC under one roof: You get full-blown virtual machines and containers, all in the same UI.

XCP-ng: Xen’s Open-Source Comeback Story

XCP-ng is the spiritual continuation of what Citrix XenServer once was, but without the licensing locks. It leans into Xen as the core hypervisor, and it’s pretty clear the team behind it wants this thing to be rock solid for serious production use.

Here’s what makes XCP-ng tick:

  • Performance Tweaks: Proxmox gives you more control over caching strategies, disk formats, and file systems. XCP-ng is more opinionated — great for consistency, maybe less fun for tuning freaks.
  • Storage: Proxmox loves ZFS and Ceph. XCP-ng sticks closer to traditional SRs (storage repositories), and doesn’t have native ZFS support in the same way. That’s a deciding factor for folks running flash-heavy or large-disk setups.

When to Choose What

Go Proxmox if:

  • You like having full access to the underlying OS (Debian).
  • You’re mixing containers and VMs.
  • You want ZFS, Ceph, or LVM baked right in.
  • You’re running smaller clusters or just need a robust homelab setup.
  • You want fast setup and don’t want to deal with extra orchestration layers.

Go XCP-ng if:

  • You’re scaling up and need a battle-tested, Xen-based solution.
  • You value tighter security isolation between VMs.
  • You don’t mind investing time in setting up and maintaining Xen Orchestra.
  • You’re managing environments where stability over customization is more important.
  • You’ve already got experience with Xen or used to run XenServer.

At the end of the day, both are capable platforms with active communities and steady roadmaps. If you’re trying to escape the tightening grip of VMware’s licensing or just want something that won’t throw surprises at you during updates, either one can get the job done. The decision comes down to what feels right for your workflow, your team’s comfort zone, and what kind of tinkering (or lack thereof) you want to deal with.
