  • Diary studies — participants log their interactions with a product or workflow over days or weeks. Useful for understanding episodic or infrequent behaviours.
  • Survey research — quantitative data from larger user populations. Useful for validating patterns identified in qualitative research, not for discovering them.

Deliverables: affinity diagrams, research synthesis reports, user personas, and empathy maps.

The purpose of low-fidelity wireframes is to test structure without the distraction of aesthetics. Stakeholders who see a polished prototype respond to visual choices. They respond to wireframes with structural feedback — which is what is needed at this stage.

High-fidelity prototypes come later, once structure has been validated. They simulate real interactions and are used in usability testing to measure user behaviour against tasks.

Phase 4: Usability Testing (1–2 weeks)

Usability testing is where assumptions are challenged with evidence.

A moderated usability test involves 5–8 participants who are given tasks to complete while a researcher observes. The researcher does not help. They watch where users hesitate, misinterpret labels, click the wrong element, or abandon the task entirely.

Nielsen Norman Group’s research established that 5 users will find approximately 85% of usability problems in any given interface. This is not a small sample — it is an efficient one. Beyond 5 users in a single round, you are hearing the same problems repeated.

Unmoderated remote testing — through tools like UserTesting or Maze — scales this process. Participants complete tasks at home on their own devices. Session recordings and click maps reveal patterns across larger samples.

Phase 5: Iteration and Handoff

Usability testing produces a prioritised list of issues. The UX designer addresses structural problems in a second or third wireframe iteration — not by patching the existing design, but by re-examining the underlying flow.

Once the structure is stable and validated, UI design begins. The handoff from UX to UI should include annotated wireframes, interaction specifications, and a documented list of edge cases. Anything undocumented in the handoff will be designed inconsistently by the UI designer or interpreted arbitrarily by the developer.

Accessibility is not an optional feature layer. It is a design discipline that sits across both UI and UX — and it affects a larger audience than most product teams realise.

In the US, approximately 26% of adults have a disability that affects how they use digital products. In the UK, the Equality Act 2010 places legal obligations on organisations to ensure digital products are accessible.

From the UX side: Accessibility in UX means designing task flows that work for users with cognitive disabilities, low digital literacy, or situational impairments (using a phone in sunlight with one hand). It means writing microcopy that is clear without relying on visual cues alone. It means ensuring that error states and feedback are communicated through multiple channels — not just colour.

This is partly altruistic, but mostly strategic: they benefit from an ecosystem of products that behave consistently with their platforms.

For mid-market SaaS companies building their own systems, the ROI calculation is straightforward. Shopify’s Polaris design system reportedly cut design review time by 40% and reduced UI-related development bugs significantly after its implementation. The investment in system documentation pays back in reduced iteration cycles and faster feature development.

The idea that UX research is incompatible with startup speed is based on a misunderstanding of the methods available. Most digital products have both problems simultaneously. The sequence matters: fix the structure before polishing the surface.

Step 2: Define Your UX Maturity Level

Nielsen Norman Group’s UX maturity model describes six stages from “Absent” (no UX practice) through “Systematic” (UX is embedded in every product decision). Most organisations sit at stage 2 or 3: UX exists but is reactive, project-based, and disconnected from strategy.

If budget forces a generalist hire, prioritise UX research capability over visual polish. A product with rough UI that solves the right problem will always outperform a beautiful product that solves the wrong one.

Step 4: Measure the Right Things

Most companies measure design through subjective approval — “does the stakeholder like how it looks?” That is a UI metric applied to a UX question.

Measure UX with:

  • Task completion rate — what percentage of users complete the intended goal?
  • Time on task — how long does it take to complete a core workflow?
