Midwest storms are scary, to say the least. Minutes before a strong storm hits, the air thickens, stills, and quiets. The sky turns a menacing shade of green before dense, charcoal-gray clouds roll in.
When I was small, my mom would snuggle beside me and tell me not to be afraid.
“The thunder is just the angels bowling,” she explained as a loud clap echoed overhead.
“But what about the lightning?” I whispered.
She smiled and looked me in the eyes. “That’s when Grandpa gets a strike.”
