Using GLP-1 medications (like Ozempic or Wegovy) can be effective for weight loss.
When you lose weight rapidly, your body doesn’t just burn fat — it can also decrease muscle mass and weaken your bones.
Here is how resistance training acts as your “fitness insurance policy” to make sure you’re losing the right kind of weight.
Before we go any further, if the idea of exercise has you running and screaming away, you do not have to have crazy sessions.
Just a few exercises can help you stay in shape or even get in shape.
If you are using these meds, you are obviously concerned about your health.
Don’t just lose the weight — Stay Strong.
Rapid weight loss can trick your body into thinking it doesn’t need as much muscle or bone density to support you.
Resistance training (lifting weights) tells your body: “Hey, we still need this muscle!”
This keeps your metabolism high and your body looking toned rather than just “thin.”
On the subject of “lifting weights,” it doesn’t have to be actual weights; it can be resistance bands.
What is “Mechanical Loading” (and why do you need it?)
Think of your bones like a bridge.
If no cars drive over the bridge, the city might stop maintaining it.
Mechanical loading is just a fancy term for putting weight on your bones.
When you lift a dumbbell, resistance band, or do a push-up, that “stress” signals your body to keep your bones dense and strong.
Without that signal, your bones can become brittle as you lose weight.
Try to focus on the “Big” Moves.
To get the most bang for your buck, focus on Compound Movements. These are exercises that use multiple joints at once, like:
- Squats and Lunges (Legs and Hips)
- Overhead Presses (Shoulders and Spine)
- Chest Presses or Rows (Upper Body)
- These moves put healthy “stress” on your spine and hips — the areas that need it most.
Not only are compound movements an excellent bang for your buck, but they are also excellent time savers, so if you have limited time to exercise, they make an excellent choice.
The Key: Slow and steady progress.
As you lose body weight, the “natural” load on your bones decreases.
To make up for that, you need to slowly increase the weight you lift in the gym.
Aim for 2 to 3 full-body sessions per week.
Focus on high-quality form and gradually add a little more weight or a few more reps over time.
There is no need to go all Gladiator (unless you want); your focus should be on a slow and steady approach to maintaining muscle mass and strength.
I am featuring a resistance band video for ideas. I am a huge fan of resistance bands because they are affordable and easy to store.
