WCA Launches Review to Address ‘ Unsustainable’ Scheduling Challenges

The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) has initiated a comprehensive review of cricket’s global structure, aiming to find solutions for the congested cricket calendar that spans international and domestic competitions.

WCA Chairman Heath Mills expressed skepticism about the ability of cricket’s governing bodies to create a balanced schedule that accommodates both international and domestic cricket. Mills noted that 84 percent of players consulted support establishing a dedicated window to harmonize both formats.

The review is led by notable figures including former Australian Cricketers’ Association chief Paul Marsh, former Pakistan captain Sana Mir, former FICA chief Tony Irish, ex-ECB CEO Tom Harrison, and Sanjog Gupta, Head of Sports at Disney Star, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

It is also worth noting that the WCA represents players from 16 different member associations, including those from Australia, England, New Zealand, and South Africa. However, the BCCI and PCB are not currently represented in the WCA. Mills criticized the current scheduling model, describing it as “broken and unsustainable,” and highlighted the difficulties players face in juggling international and domestic commitments. He added,

“We are fortunate that cricket is spoilt for choice and has three core formats across both the international game and domestic leagues; however, to date, the game’s leadership has collectively failed to come together to establish a clear and coherent global structure in which they can co-exist. We have virtually given up hope of it doing so.”

The review will also address issues related to player contracts and the challenges of regulating them amid an inadequate calendar.
