Saleem Yousaf on Zero Trust Needs More Than a Strategy Slide

This Is Where Zscaler Actually Helps A lot of organisations say they are moving to Zero Trust. Far fewer are prepared to change the access model that sits underneath it. That is usually where the problem starts. Too many businesses still run on inherited assumptions: users connect to a VPN, network location implies trust, private apps are reached through broad internal access, and security policy changes depending on where the user is. That is not Zero Trust. That is just old access design with newer language.

For me, Zero Trust starts with a simple principle: users should get access to what they need, not to the network that happens to host it. That is one reason Zscaler has become relevant in so many enterprise conversations. Used properly, it can help organisations move away from network-centric access and toward a model that is more focused on identity, context, and application-level control. That matters because most legacy access models are far too broad. They were built for reachability, not precision. Once connected, users often gain more access than they really need, and that creates risk around lateral movement, weak segmentation, and poor third-party control.

Zscaler can help address that in a few important ways. First, it can support organisations that want to reduce dependence on traditional VPN-based access. That is a big deal, because VPN often grants a level of network presence that does not align well with least privilege. Second, it can help tighten access to private applications. Instead of treating network access as the gateway, the design becomes more focused on whether a user should reach a specific app under specific conditions. Third, it can help make policy enforcement more consistent for users accessing internet, SaaS, and cloud services from different locations. That is where I see the real value.

Not in marketing phrases, but in architectural outcomes: less implicit trust, better application segmentation, stronger control over remote and third-party access, more consistent policy across hybrid environments, and reduced dependence on old perimeter thinking. That said, a platform alone is not enough. If the organisation does not have good identity foundations, sensible access policies, application ownership, and clear governance, then even a strong platform will struggle to deliver the right outcome. That is why I never view Zero Trust as a tooling project. It is an architecture and governance shift first.

Zscaler can absolutely support that shift, and in many environments it can be a strong enabler. But the real success comes when the business uses it to change how trust is granted, not just how traffic is routed. That is the difference between adopting a product and actually moving toward Zero Trust.
