PHP hasn’t disappeared, but its glorious era seems to have passed.
TIOBE released the programming language rankings for April 2024. The world’s best language, PHP, made headlines this month (Is PHP losing its mojo?), but it appeared on the list due to its lowest historical ranking.

Below are the TIOBE Top 20 programming languages for April:

As seen, PHP ranks 17th in this month’s TIOBE index.
TIOBE CEO Paul Jansen pointed out that when the TIOBE index was first published in 2001, PHP was on the verge of becoming the standard language for building interactive websites. Therefore, PHP’s popularity increased yearly, eventually gaining over 10% market share and reaching the top three positions in the TIOBE index.
“However, since then, many competitors have entered the market; for example, web development frameworks such as Rails, Django, and React have adopted Ruby, Python, and JavaScript as the main driving languages. PHP has also encountered some security issues. As a result, PHP had to reshape itself. Today, PHP still has a place in the field of small and medium-sized websites, and it is also the language behind the most popular web content management system, WordPress. So, PHP hasn’t disappeared, but its glorious era seems to have passed.”
Before you rush to criticize, let’s not forget that everyone knows the nature of TIOBE. It’s just an entertaining list of programming languages, nothing more than a bit of fun…
The PHP ecosystem is still very prosperous and active in 2024. Developer statistics have found that the number of PHP packages has steadily increased.
The PHP package repository Packagist recently surpassed the milestone of 100 billion downloads — a doubling in just two years, and this number continues to grow.

PHP is still the best language in the world, and WordPress is still the first choice for building websites. We just have more choices now, that’s all.
