Data Analytics Fundamentals
The biggest mistake I made when I started my data journey was not understanding what Data Analytics was all about. I rushed into learning the tools, which later led to frustration because I struggled to build impactful projects.
So, when I started developing the course content for the Data Analytics track here at Lenicle, I made sure the first lesson focused on Data Analytics Fundamentals.
Before we dive into what data analytics is all about, let’s first understand what data is.
What is Data?
Data refers to raw facts, figures, observations, or values collected about people, events, or activities that have not yet been processed into meaningful information.
Definition of concepts are great, but I like to support them with examples that are impossible to forget.
Whenever you enter a supermarket, make a purchase, and the cashier records details of what you bought such as the product name, date of purchase, quantity, and price, those details are data.
When someone registers to study Data Analytics with us at Lenicle and Miss. Amaka gives them a form to complete, every detail provided on that form, such as name, age, email address, or phone number, is data.
Now that we understand what data is, what exactly is Data Analytics?
Data Analytics is the process of collecting, cleaning, transforming, analyzing, and interpreting data to generate meaningful insights and support informed decision-making.
At some point, business owners and organizations will have important questions that can only be answered by exploring the data they have collected from their operations.
For example, a supermarket owner might ask:
- What are our best-selling products?
- Which products generate the highest revenue?
- Where are we experiencing a drop in sales?
Similarly, the CEO at Lenicle might ask:
- How many students registered for Data Analytics last month?
- Which course has the highest enrollment?
- Which marketing channel brings in the most students?
Examining the available data to answer questions that matter to stakeholders is what Data Analytics all about is.
