Chapter 1: The Voice in the Mirror

Evil is not something you can touch. It is something that moves from one body to another, like a breath… or a touch.

It is air that enters your lungs and poisons your mind. It makes consciousness snap into its darkest and most corrupted state. Some people are born evil, but others can lose themselves in a single moment.

It is a parasite that feeds on your purest thoughts and transforms them, turning them into rot.

I don’t know if I’m losing my mind right now… or if I have already gone insane.

I just killed my husband with a kitchen knife.

I stabbed his chest so hard that I felt the blade hit his breastbone and yet…

I was only cutting vegetables for lunch.

He had just asked me:

“Love, what are we having today?”

I turned around and stabbed him.

I don’t know why I did it.

I’m sitting here in the kitchen, staring at Robert’s body lying on the floor.

There is blood everywhere.

On me. On the floor. On his clothes. In my hair.

He never yelled at me. He never said anything cruel. He never hurt me. Not even once.

Nothing… nothing.

So why did I kill him?

[crying]

None of this makes any sense!

Should I turn myself in now?

Should I call an ambulance… or the police?

Did someone see me?

Maybe the neighbor?

Yes…

Through the window.

Poor Robert…

Who did you marry?

Would you have ever imagined that one day the woman you loved more than anything would stab you in the heart three times?

Your blood-covered face…

Your eyes wide open…

Like someone who could never believe what had happened.

Why, Robert?

My love…

Why did this happen?

“You know why.”

Who said that?

“I’m here. On the other side of the mirror.

I’m you.”

Oh my God…

Was it you?

“We were both.”

But why do you look exactly like me?

“You know why, Lullaby.

Because I am the evil that has grown with you since you were a child.

I protected you when your mother lost her mind.

Do you remember?”

No… no… no…

That’s impossible!

“She killed our father…

And our little brother Joseph.

There was no reason.

They said she was mentally ill.

But they were wrong.

I entered her.

I needed a body to possess.

Hahahaha…”

So you…

You…

You are…

“Who? The devil?”

“The devil does not exist.

You humans created him.

I come from the darkness…

A place your minds could never understand.”

Why?

Why did you do this?

“Because I enjoy watching you suffer.”

My God…

What are you?

“What do you mean?

You waited so long to discover me.

I am an elemental alien being.

In my world, we exist across different dimensions.

We drift.

We don’t need oxygen or anything else that creatures like you require.

We possess living bodies and turn them against each other.

We feed on hatred.

We enjoy watching you destroy yourselves.

Don’t ask who created me.

I have never asked myself that question.

I possessed your mother.

Now I have possessed you.

But this is not over yet.”

Oh God…

God…

God…

Help me!!!

“Who?

Oh yes…

The other invisible friend.

The good one this time.

Hahahaha!”

Stop!

Don’t talk about Him like that!

I forbid you!

“You forbid me?

You can’t do anything.

You are nothing now.

Just a murderer.

A pathetic mad woman…

Just like your mother.”

Stop!!!

“Hahahaha!

Hahahahaha!

Hahahahahaha!”

I suddenly stand up.

The tall standing mirror shatters and falls to the ground with a deafening crash.

Among the thousands of broken pieces of glass, I see her.

Me.

The evil version of myself.

In every fragment.

Laughing…

Still laughing.

Enough!!!

Get out of my head!!!

—Driiiing—

The doorbell rings.

Who could it be?

I don’t even clean myself.

I walk toward the door with the knife still in my hand.

I open it.

Two police officers are standing there.

“Good morning, ma’am. We received complaints about screaming…”

The moment the other officer sees me, he pulls his weapon.

“Drop the knife! Now!”

I can’t understand.

Everything feels distant.

Like I’m trapped inside a room made of cotton.

One officer tackles me.

The knife falls.

He holds me down.

The other enters the house.

He calls an ambulance and requests backup.

The officer holding me looks at me.

“What happened, ma’am?

Why is that man on the floor?

Is he your husband?

Why did you kill him?”

“I didn’t do it!”

I scream as his knee presses against my shoulder while he puts the handcuffs on me.

“Let me go!!

I didn’t do it!!

It was her!”

I point toward the knife, stretching my face in its direction.

The emergency responders arrive.

They lift me up and escort me to their vehicle.

Detectives surround the crime scene with yellow tape.

My head hangs down against my chest.

No one would ever believe me.

I hear the engine start.

The two officers escort me to the station for preliminary questioning.

The driver keeps looking at me through the rearview mirror.

I slowly raise my head.

He is smiling.

“Well, this beautiful little thing…

It’s a shame to take you to the station.

I think we should have some fun first.”

His partner looks at him.

“Ted! Have you lost your mind?”

Ted:

“Shut up…”

“If you want, you can watch.

Hahahaha.”

That laugh again.

Almost metallic.

His partner:

“Stop the car right now! Damn it!”

The vehicle suddenly brakes.

Ted pulls out his gun and shoots his partner directly in the face.

He dies instantly in his seat.

Pieces of his head cover the inside of the car.

Blood…

So much blood.

Everywhere.

Ted turns toward me.

“I told you…

It wasn’t over yet.”

He gets out of the car.

He opens my door.

He removes my handcuffs.

“Run, girl.

Run.

You’re free now.”

I run.

Looking back every few seconds.

Ted raises the gun to his temple.

The real Ted is begging the parasite inside him not to do it.

Bang!

His body falls to the ground like a sack of potatoes.

I run faster.

It could catch me.

It could enter me again.

I run and run…

Far away…

Like I’m running the longest marathon of my life.

Now I would probably be wanted by the police too.

Maybe if I hide…

It will never find me.

But then—

“Stop!

Police!

Get on the ground!”

I couldn’t take it anymore.

I only wanted peace.

I pretended to reach for something inside my pocket…

And I rushed toward the officers.

“Stop!”

Bang.

Bang.

Bang.

Three gunshots.

I feel myself empty.

Like all my strength has been ripped away.

Three burning flames tear through my body.

I collapse.

I see the officer running toward me…

Then I close my eyes.

In the darkness…

A voice whispers:

“My little one…

I will never leave you alone.

Hahahaha…

Hahahahaha…

Hahahahahaha…”

(To be continued…)
