Nobody Wants to Vacuum. Not Even Me. But Here We Are.

Nobody Wants to Vacuum. Not Even Me. But Here We Are.
A summer story of big plans, small humans, and the great domestic unraveling.

It started peacefully enough.
School was out.
The house was quiet.
Suspiciously quiet.
I had one goal: Sit on the couch with an iced coffee and read one chapter of a book. One. Singular. Chapter.
The kids were occupied — Which is a word I now realize is just mom-speak for “don’t ask questions yet.”
Then I heard the sound.
The unmistakable hum of something mechanical. A strange, whirring noise followed by thuds and yelling.
Enter: The Vacuum
They had taken it out “to surprise me.”
And boy, you had no idea what surprise it was:
The toddler was riding it like a horse. The six-year-old had wrapped the cord around a chair Because she “made a system.”
There was cereal on the carpet. There was peanut butter on the dog. There was joy on their faces.
And me? Frozen. Holding my iced coffee like it could protect me.
This Wasn’t the Plan
I had a plan. It involved minimal movement. Maybe a snack that wasn’t sticky.
Instead, I’m untangling furniture While pretending not to cry over spilled Goldfish.
I want to be the mom who laughs things off. Who lets the mess be part of the memory. But sometimes I just want the floor to not crunch when I walk.
Is that too much???
Helping Comes in All Shapes
They were helping. Technically.
Just… not in a way that fixed anything.
The floor was louder. The furniture stickier. The vacuum, somehow, smelled like syrup.
But their hearts were in it. And honestly, that’s worth something. Right?
So I unclenched. Took a deep breath. Made eye contact with the vacuum And accepted my fate.
The Mess Is Still Here
But so are the kids. And their weird ideas. And their chaotic love.
We’ve started doing chores together now. Not perfectly. Not even close.
But it’s a little better when we’re in it as a team. Even if someone still cries about wiping down the table “Because it makes them sad.”
It Doesn’t Have to Be Pretty
If your summer started with big plans and now smells like sour milk — I get it.
If your vacuum has seen more action than you have this week — Same, sis. Same.
Here’s something that didn’t make me want to throw a dish towel.
It’s a guide. A realistic one. No guilt. Just age-appropriate ideas that make room for trying.
And peace. Even if it’s just for one whole chapter of that book. Maybe.
