At Botanika, our mission is to build a decentralized storage and AI network anyone can join. But such a mission demands more than just software. It requires standardized, high-performance, and customizable hardware that ensures reliability and scale.
That’s exactly why we built NIMBUS, a node designed from the ground up to power real-world DePIN applications. In the previous episode, we introduced NIMBUS, the powerful hardware node at the heart of Botanika’s decentralized infrastructure.
Today, we’re continuing that journey by diving deeper into the technical specifications we didn’t cover last time, focusing on the hardware components that make NIMBUS uniquely capable of powering the future of decentralized storage and AI.

Storage: Flexibility Meets Performance
NIMBUS comes equipped with four key storage interfaces:
- 1x Onboard eMMC for OS, 64GB / 2x M.2 M Key Connector for M.2 NVMe SSD(PCIe 3.0 2-lane) / 1x SPI Flash for Bootloader
each serve a distinct role in building a flexible, scalable storage node.
eMMC & microSD: Built-in and Low-Cost Entry

eMMC (embedded MultiMediaCard) and microSD offer basic onboard storage. These are ideal for lightweight users, developers, or node operators who are just getting started. They consume minimal power, are easy to set up, and work well for system booting or running lightweight processes.
NVMe SSD: High-Speed Performance
NVMe SSDs (Non-Volatile Memory Express) connected via PCIe 3.0 provide blazing-fast storage performance, ideal for real-time applications. Perfect for storing AI inference data, metadata indexing, and handling frequent read/write operations with low latency. If you’re dealing with live AI queries or dynamic encrypted data access, NVMe gives you the speed and responsiveness you need.
1x SPI Flash for Bootloader

With an integrated SPI Flash chip dedicated to bootloader storage, NIMBUS ensures ultra-reliable and tamper-resistant system initialization. This built-in component isolates the earliest stage of system execution from user-modifiable storage, securing the foundation of your node’s lifecycle.
Whether you’re deploying nodes in hostile environments or running a distributed AI cluster, this architecture provides a consistent, secure starting point. SPI Flash delivers sub-millisecond access times and is typically locked post-deployment, making it immune to corruption, unauthorized firmware injection, or accidental overwrites.
