If you asked someone what makes a Formula 1 driver exceptional, they’d probably mention the car.
The aerodynamics.
The engine.
The tyres.
The strategy.
They wouldn’t be wrong. But I think they’re looking in the wrong place.
Long before carbon fibre, telemetry and wind tunnels come into the picture, there is another machine making thousands of decisions every minute. One that predicts, adapts, learns, remembers and sometimes fails under extraordinary pressure.
The human brain.
I’m Shreeya Jangid, an MSc Clinical Neuropsychiatry student at the University of Birmingham with a background in psychology and a fascination with elite performance. Somewhere between reading neuroscience papers and watching Formula 1 weekends, I realised that the conversations happening in these two worlds rarely overlap.
We celebrate lap times without talking about predictive processing.
We analyse overtakes without discussing attention.
We debate championship battles without asking what prolonged stress does to the brain.
That gap is where this publication begins.
The Brain Behind the Wheel is a space where neuroscience meets motorsport. Here, I’ll explore questions like:
- What actually happens inside a driver’s brain at lights out?
- Why do experienced drivers seem to “see” incidents before they happen?
- How does stress change decision-making at 300 km/h?
- What can Formula 1 teach us about attention, resilience and human performance?
- Why should mental health be considered as important as physical fitness in elite sport?
This isn’t about replacing the engineering or the racing stories. It’s about adding another layer to them.
Whether you’re a lifelong Formula 1 fan, someone curious about the human brain, or simply interested in how people perform under extreme pressure, I hope you’ll find something here that makes you look at the sport a little differently.
