Nexodus Revives the University of Adelaide’s Dormant Minecraft Scene

After five years of silence, the University of Adelaide’s Minecraft community is stirring again. A new student-led project, Nexodus, has officially launched this month, aiming to fill the void left by the long-defunct AUMC (Adelaide University Minecraft Club), which has been inactive since 10 September 2020.

For many students, the fall of AUMC marked the end of a surprisingly influential part of campus life. Its inviting community and engaging SMP once drew dozens of players across departments. But as leadership changed and the pandemic shifted student engagement online, the club quietly disappeared — until now.

“People kept asking if there was still a Minecraft group,” said one of Nexodus’s founding organisers. “After a while, it just made sense to start something new instead of waiting for something to appear. We figured that we could turn a new leaf and try something new by focusing primarily on Modded-Minecraft Events, with the hope to draw in students with different interests”.

Unlike its predecessor, Nexodus plans to operate as a modded Minecraft community, introducing more complex gameplay and player-driven events. Early plans include long-term world projects, faction-style wars, and collaborations with other university-based clubs.

Several students say they see Nexodus as more than just another gaming server. “It’s a place to meet people again,” said first-year student Garon Lain. “A lot of us started uni after lockdowns — and a community like this has been absent since”.

University officials have informally welcomed the initiative, noting that student-led clubs like Nexodus can support social connection and digital collaboration — two areas the university has encouraged through its extracurricular programs.

While the group is still finalising its constitution and committee, the founders confirm that membership will be open to all students, with an emphasis on inclusivity and creative freedom.

It’s too early to say if Nexodus will last longer than its predecessor — but for now, it has an ambitious plan, and aims to fill the void left behind by previous Minecraft clubs.
