My Father’s Drinking Turned Me Into a Control Freak

When chaos is your childhood, control feels like survival.

I used to clean and straighten the house obsessively, hoping a spotless home might control my alcoholic father from exploding.

Control is a four-letter word in Al-Anon. Control was the thing I craved the most because there was no order in my chaotic alcoholic family.

I never knew when my father would get drunk or whether he’d erupt in an angry outburst — like the time he stormed through the house stuffing my belongings into a trash bag, then woke me up on a school night to yell at me about "all my stuff laying around." The bag held only two records, a t-shirt, and a magazine. After my mom left when I was 16, I’d taken over her household duties, and apparently wasn’t doing a good enough job.

Then there was the time he flew into a drunken rage and scared my sweet feral rescue cat away from her litter of kittens. She ran into the woods. That broke my heart. He never remembered these outbursts the next day, so apologies never came. I just had to pretend that nothing had happened. I was fearful of confronting him.

Compensatory control

Trying to control people, places, and things became my way of compensating for the fear-inducing chaos of my family. Although codependency is usually discussed in terms of romantic relationships, it applies to general family dynamics, too. I became a codependent daughter — hence the term "adult child of an alcoholic."

I worked hard to keep my dad "happy," convinced he wouldn't drink if he was content. It never worked. I walked on eggshells and cleaned the house obsessively, hoping to head off a rageful outburst. That never worked either. Because I couldn't control him.

Definition

What is codependent controlling behavior? It’s the use of excessive caretaking, enabling, or guilt to manipulate another person’s actions. The codependent frames this as "helping," but the underlying goal is to manage someone else’s behavior in order to feel safe and secure.

Examples

Overfunctioning and meddling: Taking over another person’s responsibilities (paying their bills, managing their schedule). This infantilizes them and fosters dependency.

Offering unsolicited advice: Constantly telling someone how to run their life, then becoming resentful or hurt when they decline your "help."

Enabling poor habits: Shielding someone from the natural consequences of their actions — making excuses to their employer, bailing them out of financial trouble — so they never have to change.

Weaponized guilt: Using passive-aggression behavior or playing the victim to make someone feel bad for wanting independence, spending time with friends, or simply having personal space.

Manipulating through crisis: Subconsciously creating or amplifying crises because the controlling person feels most needed — most secure — when rescuing someone from a disaster. In Al-Anon, the wisdom goes: Don’t create a crisis, but don’t prevent one either.

Moving toward release

Learning to release control didn’t happen overnight. It came slowly, through Al-Anon meetings and steps, through inventory work, and through the painful recognition that my need to manage everything around me was really just fear wearing a “helpful” disguise. The good news? Once I could name it, I could start to loosen my grip — one white-knuckled finger at a time.
