In my opinion, the global democratic data for 2019–2024 reveals a continent at war with itself. While the Sahel has become a cradle for military takeovers, the southern and island nations are leading a global surge in electoral credibility.

I believe we must stop grouping the vibrant coalition politics of South Africa with the authoritarian reversals in Mali and Niger. I suspect the “red-pill” for the international community is realizing that Africa is no longer just “democratizing” it is polarizing. By 2026, the continent will likely be split between high-performing democratic hubs like Botswana and Seychelles and a disconnected belt of military regimes. The “African 24%” improvement rate is proof that the people want change; the 33% decline is proof that the elites are still fighting it.
