A Week Into My MSBA Journey at UIUC: Leaving Home, Finding Myself

Leaving home, never thought I’d do that especially when I have been raised by the most loving family. It was harder than I imagined. The moment I hugged my family goodbye, I felt a mixture of heaviness and hope. I had never lived away from India before, and the idea of navigating life in a new country, alone, was both thrilling and terrifying. Who would I become in this journey? What kind of challenges and experiences awaited me? These thoughts swirled in my mind as the plane ascended.

The flight itself became a reflective space. I thought about the journey I had always wanted — one full of learning, self-discovery, and growth. I pictured the highs and lows, the small victories, and the inevitable moments of doubt. I reminded myself that each step, no matter how uncomfortable, would teach me something invaluable.

Arriving in Champaign, the first wave of reality hit me: the scorching sun, the humidity, and the cultural differences. Every little task — getting groceries, setting up my room, navigating public transport — felt like a small adventure and a lesson in resilience. I realized that adjusting to a new environment requires patience, observation, and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. Every day I had more respect for the people who have had similar journey’s before me.

When orientation week at Gies College of Business started, it was unexpectedly enlightening. It wasn’t just about logistics or schedules — it was about understanding what a world-class business school represents. I learned how to bring a fresh perspective to group discussions, handle challenging situations, and connect with peers from diverse backgrounds. Every interaction felt like an opportunity to grow, every lecture a chance to be inspired.

One week in, and I already feel a shift in myself. I am more confident, more aware, and more determined. Life at UIUC is fast-paced, demanding, and incredibly rewarding. The professors and mentors I’ve met are not just educators — they are guides who inspire me to push boundaries and aim higher.

I miss home, and I miss the comfort of familiarity, ease. But at the same time, I am exhilarated by the possibilities ahead. The MSBA program is not just an academic journey; it is a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and transformation. I am learning to embrace uncertainty, cherish small victories, and approach challenges with curiosity and courage.

Leaving home was the first step in a journey I’ve longed for. UIUC is the environment where I can grow academically, professionally, and personally. I am excited for what lies ahead — because one week in, life already feels brighter, richer, and full of possibilities.

To anyone stepping into a new chapter of life: the first few weeks are the hardest, but it’s also the most revealing. Embrace the unknown. Be kind to yourself. And remember — every new beginning carries the seed of growth.
