Delta’s Inaugural Flight to Olbia

Airlines use many different approaches when planning their route networks, but one creative method is simply polling customers where they want to fly next. Delta Air Lines took this approach and, based on demand from its frequent flyers, launched a new route between New York’s JFK Airport and Olbia, Sardinia, on May 20, 2026. My family and I took part in this inaugural flight, and as we arrived at the gate, there was a mini celebration with pastries, drinks, a backdrop for taking photos, and plenty of swag commemorating the inaugural flight.

During the flight itself, there wasn’t much more mention of or celebration surrounding the inaugural event, but once we arrived, we were greeted by the airport staff, who had lined up along the jetway to welcome our arrival. The airport fire trucks gave our plane a water cannon salute, and more goodies were handed out as we stepped off the plane and into the warm Mediterranean sun.

Compared with inaugural flights on other airlines that I’ve experienced, Delta’s launch was relatively understated. Yet the true highlight was not the ceremony itself, but the destination: the opportunity to explore the beautiful and remarkably diverse island of Sardinia.
