The Marketing Lesson I Didn’t See Coming From a Palestinian Documentary Filmmaker — Monear Shaer
Working with Monear Shaer taught me something my playbook never did.

Monear Shaer, the Director of “Gaza Is Our Home” documentary film during one of his film screenings. Kansas, USA.
I walked into this project the way I walk into every project.
Funnel first. Then the system. Then a plan to manufacture demand.
That’s usually the job. A marketer’s job is to build the thing that makes people care.
Then I met Monear Shaer.
Monear made a documentary called *Gaza Is Our Home*. Most of it was shot on his iPhone. No studio. No distributor. No ad budget for marketing to work with.
I figured my job was still the same. Just leaner. Build a lean version of the usual machine, and push.
I was wrong about that. It took me a while to see why.
The Job I Thought I Had
For the first three months, I did what I always do.
I built the website. I thought through funnels. I looked for the gaps where a little paid traffic could move things forward.
The plan made sense on paper. It just never quite mattered.
Screenings kept happening anyway. Ninety of them, eventually, across universities, mosques, churches, community centers. Most of them didn’t come from anything I built.
What I Actually Found
Here’s what was really driving it.
One screening would happen. Someone in that room would know someone two states away. They’d reach out. Another screening would get booked.
No funnel did that. No targeting did that.
And then there was the thing I really didn’t expect. During some screenings, Monear calls his family in Gaza, live. The audience watches the film, then watches the people in it answer questions in real time.
I didn’t build that. Nobody did. It was already true about his life, long before I showed up.
The Lesson, Once I Finally Saw It
I’d spent years assuming my job was to create the reason people care.
This project taught me that sometimes the reason already exists. It’s just sitting there, unnoticed, doing nothing, because nobody has pointed at it yet.
The actual lesson wasn’t a tactic. It was this: the most powerful thing in the room is rarely something you build. It’s something you almost miss, because it doesn’t look like marketing. It looks like a phone call. A relationship. A story someone already trusts enough to pass on.
My real job turned out to be much smaller than I thought. Notice what’s already working. Don’t get in its way. Make it slightly easier for more people to find.
What Changed in How I Work
I look at every client differently now.
Before I propose a single tactic, I ask what’s already happening that nobody’s paying attention to. Usually, something is.
I’ve also gotten more honest with myself about platforms not being neutral, and about the difference between a one-time donor and a recurring one. Those lessons came from this project too. But the big one, the one I didn’t see coming, was simpler than all of that.
Sometimes the best thing a marketer can do is stop trying to build the engine, and start paying attention to the one that’s already running.
If you haven’t seen Gaza Is Our Home, it’s free to watch. And if it moves you the way it’s moved the rooms I’ve watched it in, there’s probably a screening happening near you — or room to start one.
