Sometimes the stupidest thing we do all day is look down at our phone.

Italy may start fining people who use their phones while crossing the street. Sounds a little nuts until you actually watch people crossing a street.

I do stupid-ass shit with my phone too. I’ll be walking along reading something that could easily wait.

And it doesn’t matter where you are. Rome, New York, Munich, Chicago, or some one-horse town with a tractor crawling down the road.

People do it everywhere. One person is texting between moving cars, another is staring at Google Maps, and somebody else is walking straight toward you without looking up.

There’s always some excuse. A message, directions, the weather, a reply, some damn thing that suddenly needs to be checked right now.

And usually, nothing happens. We get where we’re going and barely give it another thought.

So we do it again. And again.

I’ve reached for my phone plenty of times for no real reason at all. Half the time I’m already looking at it before I even think about why.

That’s what gets me. I wasn’t deciding to check anything.

Whatever’s happening on that little screen can usually wait 32 seconds. Getting run over would be a pretty stupid way to find out it couldn’t.
