The samples are back
Modern Times told us: “Mechanize. Standardize. Productize your line.”
The samples are back
Estée Lauder visiting a new brand counter at the Sakowitz Department Store in Houston, Texas, in 1951.
Modern Times told us: “Mechanize. Standardize. Productize your line.”
But did we do it to the customer journey too?
But beauty shopping doesn’t really behave like that.
For a while, it looked like it did.
Big players built “omnichannel” like the answer to everything.
Sephora, KICKS and others started designing journeys like they were solving a system problem:

Clean. Logical. Efficient. Like everything could be stitched together into one smooth flow.
Beauty became faster. More connected. More measurable.
But something interesting is happening now.
The value of samples is becoming clearer again.
Not as a marketing extra. Not as a free gift.
But as one of the highest-leverage moments in the entire customer journey.
Because beauty has a problem most categories do not. People do not just buy beauty products. They test risk.

Influencers helped solve discovery. They create attention, desire, urgency. But they do not fully solve uncertainty.
And uncertainty is expensive.
Expensive in: low conversion high CAC returns abandoned carts weak retention low trust
That is where samples quietly become powerful. A sample is not just trial.
It is the customer journey in miniature.

It compresses the entire decision-making process into one small physical experience:
curiosity testing validation confidence
And once that uncertainty disappears, the economics change dramatically.
Influencers create interest.
Samples create certainty.
And certainty is what drives: conversion, loyalty, repeat purchase, and long-term customer value.
Maybe that is why samples suddenly feel important again. Not because beauty is becoming less digital. But because digital alone cannot fully replace proof.
In beauty, people still want to feel the product before they trust it.
And the brands that understand that best may quietly outperform everyone else.
