The reason for Pentax17 being Half

The left is set to 3 meters, and the right to infinity (about 10 meters). Technically, infinity is correct — but the 3m shot still works. It feels soft and balanced, with in-focus foreground that doesn’t steal attention. On a digital camera like the GR, the difference would be obvious. But with half-frame film, the grain smooths out the image. It breaks sharp lines into softer tones, depending on how the film is developed.

Digital sensors always map light precisely onto each pixel. When processed properly from RAW, the in-focus and out-of-focus areas are rendered with sharp separation — too precise to recreate the softness film naturally gives. This is also why digital cameras need to nail focus precisely — relying on zone focusing alone usually isn’t enough to render all the details, unless the sensor is very small. But cameras with small sensors typically don’t come with lenses sharp enough for serious, high-quality images.

Sharpness on the Pentax 17’s 25mm f/3.5 lens remains consistent from center to edge.

This is one of the most important features of the Pentax 17 as a half-frame camera — it condenses the optical advantages of a standard SLR lens, originally meant for serious photography, into a compact point-and-shoot form while keeping costs reasonable.

If this were a full-frame 37.5mm f/3.5 lens, zone focusing would require more distance steps to properly cover mid-range subjects. And to maintain sharpness to the corners while suppressing optical flaws, the lens would likely need more elements and higher-grade materials and coatings — driving up both complexity and cost.

There is a significant difference in enlargement capability between 120 cameras and 135 cameras, but 120 cameras lack many of the Pentax 17’s advantages — such as one-handed shooting, zone focusing, easier film loading and more exposures, better tolerance for slow shutter speeds, and reduced shutter vibration. This makes 120 cameras more suitable for planned shoots with higher standards aiming for image quality.

In other words, if you already have a specific subject in mind, a 120 camera and a sturdy tripod are essential. However, if you’re just looking for inspiration on the streets, the results from the Pentax 17 are comparable to those of a full-frame camera of similar size.

The main challenge of shooting film today isn’t the photography itself, but the old technologies from 20 years ago — like autofocus, optical viewfinders, accessories, and mechanical controls — that we used to take for granted. Now, we have to compromise and find the best mix of features with limited resources. That’s why half-frame cameras are popular — not only do they save film costs, but the hurdles for 120 and 135 formats are now similar. New cameras are slowly shifting from full-frame to half-frame. Unless you have access to good vintage film cameras, adapting to this trend early may be necessary. Even simple models like the H35 can capture unique atmospheres with the right shutter timing.
